Description

This is the place where all Dallas rock music fans have been at one time in their lives. Visiting Trees is like a rite-of-passage for area high-school seniors, who have assured their parents that they're safe and sound at a friend's house. It's a place with great history and legend, like Kurt Cobain's infamous fight with a bouncer, and many ear-splitting performances from The Flaming Lips. In recent years Trees shut down and reopened with the help of new management. A fresh coat of paint and some remodeling around the bar has the once ramshackle operation looking as sleek as any ultra-lounge in town. A trip to Trees is a history lesson--plus you get to hear some great local and national bands.

  • 2011 | Best Sound System

You old-timers need to quit it with your Trees-was-better-back-in-the-day horse manure. Just stop it. Right now. Yes, Radiohead played there once upon a time. Sure, Nirvana too. Others as well, we're told. News flash: Radiohead is not going to be playing a 600-capacity venue again any time soon. The next Radiohead Just maybe, if we're lucky. But here's the thing: If such an up-and-coming act does play Trees this time around, they'll sound way better now than they ever possibly could have... More »

  • 2009 | Best Not-Quite-Nostalgia Fodder

Back in August, when Clint and Whitney Barlow reopened the much-loved space that once saw Kurt Cobain get his ass kicked by a security guard, they had to deal with the pressure of living up to the hype of the club of the same name, which had closed four and a half years earlier. And because it wasn't exactly the same Trees--most notably, it's nicer, thanks to the improvements the Barlows made to the room's sound system, bar, green room, bathrooms and other amenities--the old "I... • 2001 | Best Alternative Club

The best alternative club this year is not the same one as last year, even though both are named Trees. Since that time, Trees has undergone a significant makeover, classing up the joint (oooh, a velvet curtain!) while making it more fan-friendly in the process. Meaning: You no longer have to crane your neck around the air conditioner if you want to watch a show from the balcony, and the same goes for downstairs, where the revamped bar doesn't obstruct anyone's view of the stage anymore. But... More »

Billed as "an acoustic collaborative event," this year's edition of The Revival Tour features Chuck Ragan, Tom Gabel, Dan Andriano and Cory Branan. Definitely not a situation where open G, C and D chords are strummed over and over all night — impr... More »

Of Montreal's Keven Barnes has gone through one of the most fascinating evolutions of any pop songwriter in the past two decades. Starting with 1999's The Gay Parade and continuing with last month's Paralytic Stalks, Barnes and whatever set of pla... More »

    Lucero Continue to Evolve

    | Thu, March 08, 2012

For Lucero's Ben Nichols, the development of his band's sound has been a matter of mere evolution, not a purposeful attempt to piss off longtime fans who wish they would play the same songs on every tour stop. The change began with 2009's 1372 Ov... More »

Mississippi's Big K.R.I.T. hasn't always been such a man of mystery. His acclaimed mixtapes have been available for free and he's vying for valedictorian of the current DIY, next-big-thing hip-hop class. Dallas has seen a rash of his peers in the ... More »

My favorite music venue when I was a squirrely punk from Plano - caught so many shows here I lost count. Now back open (and with better bathrooms!) and putting out great lineups each week.
