Description

Housed in a turn-of-the-century brick building in which ships' engines were once built, Town Hall is an urbane, glamorous place whose setting feels like New England, while its American menu betrays certain New Orleans touches (Sazeracs and tasso among them). We loved the duck and the butterscotch and chocolate pot de crème, but the rest of the menu can be uneven.

  • 2010 | Best Surf and Turf

Photograph by Lara HataSurf and turf's expense-account-shattering allure hinges on a fairly straightforward conceit: Meat is expensive, and so is seafood. Uniting them on one plate is really expensive, and therefore luxurious and appealing. For those unable to shell out for filet mignon and Maine lobster at Harris' Steakhouse, a few San Francisco restaurants traffic in affordable, exciting unions of hoof and fin (or shell).Incanto's vitello tonnato with marrow bones and tuna heart1550... Year after year, Town Hall maintains a prime status among SF's best restaurants. They have the best meatballs dish in town (roasted veal meatballs), and serve one of the best steaks (a Niman Ranch ribeye) pork chops (tasso-peanut crusted), and lamb shanks in town as well. See http://meatmeister.wordpress.com (search "Town Hall") for individual dish reviews of Town Hall dishes. The decor is great, combining sophistication and quirkiness, New Orleans and East Coast and San Francisco. Service is friendly and smart, and they have a large communal table in front to accommodate last-minute diners in a friendly, no-hassle environment. Don't miss their annual Mardi Gras party, either; it's amazing.
