The Tower Grove Farmers' Market remains the standout among the area's many such markets not simply because of its produce -- though the produce is great, of course. The selection of farms and orchards from both sides of the Mississippi chart the progress of the growing season, from asparagus and strawberries to peaches and string beans to tomatoes and sweet corn. (Also figs, mushrooms, eggs, meat, bread, fresh pasta, cured meats and more.) What's more remarkable, though, is the... More »
How do you know a farmers' market is no longer a bourgie affectation but an essential staple of city life? When the heat index is somewhere north of 150 degrees (OK, roughly), yet hundreds upon hundreds of St. Louisans turn out, clutching their reusable canvas shopping bags, eyeing the stands for the first peaches or sweet corn or tomatoes of the season, jostling for the year's last asparagus, nodding their heads in time to the live music and looking wistfully at the kids splashing in the... The market opens at 8:30 a.m., and you better believe that people are ready to pounce on fresh produce from Biver and Live Springs farms, meat from... More »
On a sun-drenched summer Saturday morning, the squeals and shouts of kids splashing in Tower Grove Park's wading pool are no match for the excited voices at the nearby Tower Grove Farmers' Market. "That asparagus is gorgeous." "Are strawberries here yet?" "Did I sleep too late to get the ripest tomatoes?" You'll hear that last question a lot. The market opens at 8:30 a.m., and you better believe that people are ready to pounce on fresh produce from Biver and Live Springs farms, meat from Hinkebein Hills, Greenwood and Prairie Grass Farms and, this year, artisan salume from Salume Bedu. And those are just some of the growers and vendors who draw hundreds of hungry St. Louisans every Saturday morning from early May though late October. Throw in coffee, freshly made crêpes and live music, and the Tower Grove Farmers' Market can feel less like a shopping trip and more like a party celebrating the area's remarkable bounty.
