In St. Louis, most restaurant discussions begin and end with Tony's, for very good reason. The Bommarito clan, which owns the restaurant, is positively fanatical about perfection in every aspect of the meal. Entrées are not particularly elaborate but are perfectly balanced. Lobster Albanello is considered something of a signature dish, but nowhere will you find a better veal chop. There is generally something available either on or off the menu to please any mood, including a layering of roasted fresh vegetables for the non-carnivore. Throughout the meal, patriarch Vince Bommarito wanders and schmoozes.
Have you still not made your dinner plans for Valentine's Day yet? Are you worried that there are no tables for two available at any of your favorite romantic spots in St. Louis? Did you ignore the on... More »
Our friends at Eater are celebrating "Whale Week," a tribute to high-spending diners -- or whales, as they're known in industry-speak. As part of the festivities, Eater ranked the fourteen most expens... More »
Post-Dispatch restaurant critic Joe Bonwich published his final review today, reaffirming downtown institution Tony's (410 Market Street; 314-231-7007) as a "perfect" dining experience and awarding it... More »
Gut Check asked you to vote to determine St. Louis' most overrated Italian restaurant. As the pie chart above shows, the voting wasn't especially close. The Finalists: Cunetto House of Pasta (5453 Ma... More »
Our call for nominations for St. Louis' most overrated Italian restaurants didn't generate nearly as many submissions as we expected. (Come on, folks. We know how jaded you really are.) Still, a few n... More »
A double-dip recession is likely, maybe imminent, maybe already here. That means conspicuous consumption is out for another year. How long is that now? Two years? Three? That is a long time to go without a visit to Tony's, the restaurant synonymous with over-the-top fine dining in St. Louis. Tony's might have loosened its weekday dress code (tie optional, but most men still wear jackets), but Vince Bommarito and company have maintained their high standards in both the kitchen and dining... Twelve months of doom and gloom are more than enough. The time has come to tell this economy exactly what it can do to itself. No better place than venerable Tony's, the sine qua non of classy, old-school dining in St. Louis. No better way than to peruse the impressive wine list, which harkens back to a day when the credit-card expense account didn't equal original sin, and the best wine wasn't judged by which label had the cutest critter. Elegant, sometimes brawny, reds dominate: Barolo,... More »
Ah, Tony's. The quiet murmur of satisfied, stuffed wealth. The subtle opulence. The way you can race a server to your chair in a vain attempt to stop him from holding it out for you. The wine list, and then the other wine list if you're prepared to go all-out. You must choose, so choose wisely. But what to eat with your wallet-lightening vino? Anything you want. "Anything," your server will tell you, "except pizza or a baked potato." Do you want a course of foie gras with a Sauternes on the... More »
The food is terrific, the atmosphere elegant (if a bit over the top), the service superb -- even if the busboy does hover over your water glass. But you don't eat at Tony's for any of those reasons. You eat at Tony's because when you eat at Tony's you're made to feel as if you are the only customer Mr. Bommarito has that night. Tony's is the place where the tradition of sophisticated dining -- gentlemen must wear jackets -- is proudly upheld. Your every whim, your littlest desire, your... More »
Before Tony's moved to its current Broadway location, server Herb Cray (now retired) found he had a knack for showing restaurant guests to their tables while ascending a flight of stairs -- backward. Owner Vince Bommarito's philosophy, which also applied to Cray, both figuratively and literally, is that "you never turn your back on a guest." Tony's has employees who have never missed a day of work in more than 40 years, and some have served for as long as 44 years. Yes, equally efficient... More »
My boyfriend took me to Tony's for my 21st birthday and the service was fabulous. We met the owner and he was so courteous. They brought out a piece of cake with a candle for my birthday - the service was just phenomenal. The restaurant is upscale and the menu is more on the expensive side but it is completely worth it! The lobster in creamy sauce appetizer was my favorite!
Such a good place to go for all your special occasions!
