You might not know the name Tom Ryan, but you’ve probably heard of Smashburger, the fast-casual concept he founded in Denver in 2007. Smashburger has been a smashing success, and now Ryan has put his name and know-how behind another venture: Tom’s Urban 24. Launched in a sunny, two-story space on a prime corner of Larimer Square, Tom’s never closes, serving non-stop comfort food to business lunchers and weekend brunchers, show-goers and late-night bartenders who get off work and aren’t ready to head home. With its round-the-clock hours and a menu dotted with dishes like the Midnight Slopper and Colorado Hot Brown, it has the feel of an upscale diner – even if that wasn't Ryan’s original intention. But that’s okay. Denver is a big town, and not everyone wants artisanal charcuterie or sea bass with sunchoke veloute. Sometimes you just want to hole up in a curvy booth with a burger, and Tom’s Urban 24 is the place for that, especially if you want a craft cocktail to go along with it.
Went here for my birthday in March and the service was great! The server was attentive for our group of 12 and everyone loved their food. The drinks were a big hit too...the chai mojito was amazing and we all had a few.
It surprises me how excellent the service is at Smashburger -- I've been to three locations -- and how spotty the service at Tom's has been over three visits. Why did I and my coworkers stop here? Emergency overnight shifts with meal reimbursement. Now that it's over, there is no draw to Tom's.
Simplify the stinking menu: this place reminds me of the kind of establishment in "Restaurant Impossible" or "Kitchen Nightmares" where a keen chef goes in and cuts the menu to 20 items and comes up with simple and fresh preparations at fair prices. I've paid dearly for fancy attempts from menus that try to cover too many bases. It's sad.
"Comfort food with an urban twist" is hip-speak for "add $4.00." I'll take Pete's Kitchen any day over this place.
About me: 26, Congress Park homeowner, software engineer and website troubleshooter/ordering systems, gin drinker, dogs and cats.
This dump was over-priced with over-cooked, lousy food. The prime rib had lots fat on it. The meatloaf was hard and crusty, over-cooked, and tasted old. I got a half-filled wine glass margarita drink. They told me they could fill the glass with ice if I wanted a full glass! Not even served in a nice big margarita glass :( When I compare this to any other popular restaurant, the food and drinks were badly presented and tasted awful.
The floor to the restrooms, made us feel as though we were walking down the passageway of a ship in rough seas. We had to hold onto the wall to keep our balance. Shocking and disgusting place. I would rather starve than eat there again, even if it's 2am!
The price tag on the burgers at Tom's Urban 24, which I reviewed last week, resulted in a flurry of comments -- a bigger flurry than we've seen in the skies today, in fact. Some readers thought the pr... More »
This past week on Cafe Society, Gretchen Kurtz reviewed Tom's Urban 24, the upscale diner that Tom Ryan opened last fall in Larimer Square. Read her review of Tom's Urban 24 here. Sixteen blocks furt... More »
Tom's Urban 24, which I review this week, isn't a chef-driven restaurant. The bar is where the real personalities reside, with seven mixologists bringing their own craft and spirits (pun intended) to ... More »
While Gretchen Kurtz was eating a $13 burger at Tom's Urban 24, Jenn Wohletz dropped by a link in the tiny Five Star Burgers chain. "The green chile cheeseburger was an exercise in Southwestern excess... More »
Since Tom Ryan founded Smashburger, it's no surprise that his namesake Tom's Urban 24serves a good burger. "Made with eight ounces of ground Angus, the patty isn't smashed to order, as it is at Ryan's... More »
There are numerous reasons to be out and about in Denver, even at 3 a.m., and Tom's Urban 24 will make sure that you never go to bed with a growling belly -- although if you're two sheets to the wind, you might have a few problems maneuvering your way through the menu, which is as long as the work day is short. A new addition to Denver's very small round-the-clock lineup, Tom's is a massive, hip joint on the edge of Larimer Square. Spry young servers deliver food that's anything but... More »
