Longtime favorite for parties features decent food, great margaritas, and a fabulous collection of over a hundred premium, 100 percent blue agave tequilas.
Lately, to my delight, there's been a spate of incredibly crappy busking goin' round various BART and Muni stations. Don't get me wrong: I like the good musicians, too, but the bad ones really make my day. There are two guys (to my knowledge,... More »
According to one legend currently circulating at Tommy's Mexican Restaurant, it all began as follows: Many centuries ago, a storm swept over the plains of western Mexico, and a thin finger of lightning bridged the gap between heaven and earth,... More »
Who doesn’t love a good steak (I mean other than vegetarians) and an extensive collection of truly delicious wine?! There are few fine dining restaurants that have a menu both sophisticated and simple enough to appeal to most any palette. Fleming’s is that restaurant. Located at Newport Fashion Island, it is a lovely restaurant that offers both bone-in filets (a scrumptious and marbled filet that makes your mouth sink in and smile) and a wine list that will make your Sommelier alter-ego swirl and sip with glee. Yes, glee. There are a few menu must-haves: Bone-in filet, Fleming’s potatoes - for those “not counting calories” days, baked potato (no, really, it’s AMAZING), wedge salad, calamari (trick is to order it EXTRA crispy), BBQ glazed salmon, crème brûlée, and the bread. Yes, the bread. Unfortunately, here is where I inform you I only drink red wine (sorry Chardonnay lovers). The selection of wine I have had the pleasure of indulging in while there: Belle Glos Pinot Noir, Justin Isosceles, Duckhorn Merlot, and Pride Cabernet. With over a hundred wines by the glass, Fleming’s offers a unique dining experience that gives you a reason to go out and an opportunity to enjoy a dinner worth your time (and money).
No matter who you are, pulling up a chair at Tommy's means two things are certain: You'll learn something about tequila, and you'll have a great margarita. Having created the renowned "Tommy's" margarita (fresh lime juice, agave syrup, and tequila), astonishing for its ability to showcase the tequila rather than muddle its flavor, owner and bar manager Julio Bermejo has amassed the best and most extensive collection of blue agave tequilas, not just in number of brands, but also in releases.... You know the line, the Mark Twain line, about the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. Well, you can add spring to that, at least this year. The last few weeks have had us all fantasizing about a quick trip to Mexico. Of course, we either can't afford it or our bosses won't let us go. But if we can't have the Mayan Riviera for a few days, we can at least have a damn good margarita, and the best place to get it is Tommy's. After a couple of owner Julio Bermejo's... More »
Higher education can be a bitch: classes, homework, thesises -- or are those theses? Regardless, after a while it makes your brain hurt. Unless, of course, the degree you seek is a tequila Ph.D. from Tommy's, where 145 pure blue agave tequilas, the largest selection outside Mexico, make for a unique educational opportunity. After a mere 70 double shots, plus a written test, you too will be among the few, the proud, the doctors of agave. Bartenders might do well to include this on their... More »
