Drive past this Fort Lauderdale roadside log cabin at lunch or dinnertime and you'll understand exactly why lines stretch out the door. The aroma of meat grilling over red oak and hickory is hard to resist, so why bother? Just find a spot in the tiny, crowded lot, order your ribs, beef, or chicken at the counter, and keep a sharp eye out for a seat - one is hard to come by. The sauce recipe, developed by the owners from old family recipes, is a thick, tasty blend of molasses, honey, and a variety of secret ingredients. Side dishes, from collard greens to macaroni and cheese, are uniformly excellent and artery-clogging (try the baked beans for a slightly more-healthful alternative). Don't miss Tom Jenkins' sweet potato pie for dessert.

We know, we're not surprising anyone with this one. Yeah, the line stretches out the door around lunchtime on Saturday, and they retail their sauce in bottles. Yeah, at certain times of the day, it's not as good (though it's your fault if you expect great barbecue at odd hours). But goldangit, Tom Jenkins' and all of its carbonized, log-cabiny kitsch is just the most fun and satisfying place to get your rib-stickin' meat in this fair county. The building was repurposed and renovated years... More »
As tasty as it is eccentric -- Tom Jenkins' is right off Federal in a log-cabin-inspired building that began accepting credit cards only last year -- this is a communal dining establishment. There are no reclusive tables for two here. Just long tables with benches, where blue-collar, white-collar, and no-collar types bump elbows as they munch on racks of secret-sauce-drenched spare ribs and coarsely chopped pork sandwiches. The desserts are just as sought-after: homemade sweet potato... More »
Don't be harsh on those folks who go to Tom Jenkins and order the barbecued chicken. They're not bad people, just misinformed. It isn't their fault nobody's told them the ribs here are the thickest, meatiest, and smokiest that you can possibly find this side of the Mississippi and that it's the ribs that set Tom's jaunty old barbecue joint apart from the rest. Besides, the deep, brick-red barbecue sauce here is so seriously and piquantly delicious that it can make even poultry seem... More »
Make no mistake, Tom Jenkins is the granddaddy of 'em all. A business that started as a traveling weekend barbecue, this 40-seatery doesn't pull any punches with its hickory-infused products; it just pulls pork... and chicken, spare ribs, baby-back ribs, baked beans, hush puppies, and the like. After eight years as top player, it's only natural that Tom Jenkins should spawn. In this case, the offspring is inspiration: the aforementioned Soul Food 2 Go in Hollywood and Jack's Bar-B-Q...
