Description

With a Spanish name meaning "everything cold," Todo Frio is a traditional neighborhood ice cream parlor with a Hispanic twist. It's located feet away from Douglas Park, in an unassuming shopping center on 37th Avenue. An overwhelming scent of sugar and cotton candy fills the small shop. Targeted toward children, it's painted in primary colors and even has a small red table perfectly sized for tiny patrons. The walls are decorated with photos of smiling kiddies donning ice-cream-cone-shaped hats made of foam. Todo Frio serves ice cream in more than 18 flavors. Popular choices include the mangotastic, guavalicious, and cafecito. A scoop of the Eiffel tower ($1.50 or $1.75 on a sugar cone) features a blend of chocolate and vanilla with an added caramel swirl. Another sweet option is the birthday flavor, a mom-and-pop take on Coldstone's "Birthday Cake Remix," made with chunks of freshly baked cake, raspberry ice cream and rainbow sprinkles. Every scoop can be topped with syrups, sprinkles, waffle crumbs, Oreo chunks, M&M's and/or peanuts. Parlor favorites like banana splits, brownie sundaes, and milkshakes are also available. But it's not all cold. Todo Frio also offers warm snacks, such as wraps made with turkey, ham, or tuna, as well as hot dogs and arepas. And to pair with their "cafecito" ice cream flavor, patrons can score shots of Cuban coffee for 60 cents.

Sure, that spot has a cutesy name, Ikea décor, UM girls who think your facial scruff is way cool, and other temptations such as 1,000 self-serve toppings charged by weight. Keep it simple and opt for ice cream. Todo Frio does it old-school with good, traditional, calorie-laden, scooped-up, no-soy-substitutes frosty stuff. The sweetest part: old-timey prices. An ice-cream cone will set you back $1.50. Flavors... More »
