Description

Miami Cuban café meets bohemian coffeehouse at Tinta y Café. A window outside dispenses Cuban coffee, pastelitos, and croquetas to sleepy 9-to-5 workers in need of a jolt en route to the office. Inside, mismatched couches and bookshelves re-create a living room where you can read or work while sipping coffee or eating lunch. The menu is predominantly sandwiches and salads; most items are priced under $10. One favorite is the namesake Tinta y Café ($10.25 regular, $6.25 mini), made of prosciutto topped with pulled pork and caramelized onions pressed between baguette slices. Another is la noche entera - whose name is a play on the popular Cuban medianoche - a combo of ham, pork, cheese, pickles, and mustard on a sweet roll. Other Cuban classics include tamales and a self-proclaimed "homemade and wicked" flan. The croquetas are also a treat. Plus there's delivery.

  • 2006 | Best Croquetas

These fried snacks can deliver a hit-or-miss assault on the taste buds, depending on how long they have been sweltering under a hot light. Coated in a toasty layer of breadcrumbs, a properly prepared fresh croqueta should be tender, flaky, and mouthwatering. But when these thumb-size devils are left to ferment, they end up dry with a mysteriously gray interior. And if wolfed down in a fit of hunger, they can induce a nasty bowel-quivering experience. Most connoisseurs agree that the best... More »
