Scenesters love dropping by this strip mall drinking den on the south side of Mill Avenue, as do college kids, frat cats, local musicians, or anyone looking for an alcoholic escape. What's the appeal? Cheap booze ($2.50 bottled domestics and $6 pitchers) for one, as well as plenty of cheap thrills (including numerous arcade games and pool tables), and plenty of opportunities for people-watching. It's also spacious, with a slew of comfy booths and couches where you can perch with friends while soaking up the shabby-chic dive atmosphere and earning hipster cred.
First Friday is usually a big blowout for us. After stomping the streets to stare at the scene's art, we're ready to hit the bottle, big time. This past weekend, we not only hit the bottle we smashed it into a million effing pieces. So when it... More »
A good jukebox is key to a good time -- even if you're watching the game. Hey, we're all about multi-tasking these days, even when we're out on the town. And the jukebox at Time Out Lounge typically pumps out good jams from the likes of Elvis Costello, The Buzzcocks, and The Stooges. It's usually pretty mellow in the Time Out, as the name suggests, but that's one of its main charms. Behind its wood-paneled walls (blocking the windows, natch), punks and scenesters shoot pool, drink cold... More »
So many bars have an informal dress code -- a sort of de facto aesthetic agreement rendering anyone who doesn't fit the bill uncomfortable in the establishment, even if they're not, technically, unwelcome. Not Tempe's Time Out Lounge. This is the sort of place where, when a girlfriend asks your advice on what to wear, you can say "anything" and be absolutely and irrefutably right. Some of the regulars wear Stetsons and boots, others are ASU kids in hoodies, and you're bound to see a few... More »
Time Out may look like just another strip mall dive bar, but make no mistake: The pool tables are the main attraction. Well, the pool tables and the incredibly strong, incredibly cheap drinks. Banners from pool tourneys past line the wall, and the bar hosts amateur tournaments on Saturdays at 3 p.m. Most people who play are very good, so if you're an amateur (read: if you suck) you may want to steer clear of the billiards, at least during the bar's peak hours. There's plenty -- darts,... More »
This is a fairly good punk-rock dive bar. It has a pretty unique and diverse jukebox, mostly consentrating on punk music. It has a few pool tables, dart boards, video games and pin ball games. It has a nice retro feel and cheap drinks. A good place to kick back.
The epitome of dive bar. This place has cheap pitchers and bartenders who will tell it like it is. It's right in the heart of Tempe's neighborhoods, so it's a great spot to walk to, have a few too many, then make the walk home.
