Microbrews and Spanish tapas don't seem like the most intuitive pairing, conceptually, but ThirstyBear's owner, Ron Silberstein, has made them work for more than a decade. The two-story, industrial pub and restaurant is often thronged, pulling in a regular SF crowd as well as lanyard-wearing business types who drift over from the convention center. It helps that Silberstein's beers are well made, from the lightest of the wheats to the darkest of stouts, and certified organic to boot. The tapas aren't uniformly oustanding, but the tortilla would satisfy a Castilian grandmother, the patatas bravas are always a hit, and the kitchen has a knack for seafood.

Dilemma: The weekend is coming to its inevitable close, you'd like to fit in one last bit of revelry before Monday, but your wallet is feeling the damage from the past two days. Solution: Pop a squat at the ThirstyBear for the flamenco shows each Sunday at 7:15 and 8:30 p.m. Dancer Kerensa DeMars and a constantly changing lineup of local dancers, guitarists, and vocalists from the Bay Area's flamenco community perform a traditional cuadro-style show of the intense and complex Spanish Gypsy... Vanilla beer? Strange, but true, and it's just one of the peculiarities of the Thirsty Bear, where seven tasty house microbrews are juxtaposed with a lengthy tapas menu in a brassy, industrial, South of Market setting. Even if the bartenders do look at you a little funny for ordering it, the sweet-smelling brew -- which seems closer to A&W than Amstel -- is just the thing for washing down zesty offerings such as patatas al ajillo (aka "garlic fries") and gambas al pil-pil (shrimp with garlic...
