This West Bank dive might be the messiest restaurant in the city, but that doesn't mean they don't make a great dog. The meat is Vienna Beef brand and so are the buns, which are speckled with purple poppy seeds. The man manning the grill, owner Pat Starr, with his trademark beard and stocking cap, seems to know most of his customers. And he has plenty of patience for those who have trouble deciding between a traditional Chicago dog, the Coney Island chili version, or the more unconventional Picnic Dog (baked beans, coleslaw, and cheese) or breakfast-style Upsetter (bacon and eggs), of which Starr says, "It's hardcore." If you want your dog with mayonnaise, well, you can have it with mayonnaise. You can also have it vegetarian, or even vegan. In fact, you can probably have it with anything Starr has back in the kitchen, if you ask nicely enough. Just make sure to order it with fries.
Despite that brief, embarrassing episode with the so-called freedom fries, a certain slice of Americana requires a plate of French fries. From a diner burger to sopping up the white wine and butt... More »
In case you weren't already in the know, July is National Hot Dog Month. In honor of the event, we decided to check in on the Wienery, winner of City Pages' Best Hot Dog honors. We spoke to Gus, one o... More »
As spring advances, hot dogs get increasingly delicious. They evoke street vendors, ball games, and grill-outs, and, as the temperature starts its creeping climb toward "habitable," the idea of sinking your teeth into a frankfurter gets a lot... More »
Dear Dara, I have been on a French-fry quest for a number of years. I am operatic in stature, and the fries, I'm certain, are what keeps me at fighting weight. Without a doubt, the best fries in the Twin Cities are made at the 112 Eatery. I'm... More »
The Wienery 414 Cedar Ave., Mpls.; 333-5798 Joey D's Chicago Style Eatery 3101 E. 42nd St., Mpls.; 729-5507 Paws Dogs 7920 France Ave. S., Bloomington; 831-8188 It happened at one of those ultra-fancy, ultra-foodie events--one of those... More »
When it comes to hot dogs, the Wienery is the best in the Twin Cities--worth a visit for its sheer variety in both franks and toppings. This year we single out the Italian Veggie Dog as the best hot dog in the city--especially when topped off to become the "Briny Dog"--with jalapeños, pickled carrots, kraut, and crisp, crunchy pickles. The Briny's got just the right amount of spice, enough to keep the mouth and lips kicking, but not painfully aflame, 30 minutes after it... More »
Just as trail mix tastes best on the trail, a proper hot dog tastes best in a dive. In the Twin Cities, no atmosphere is more appropriate for hot dog consumption than the Wienery, a dump (in the best sense of the word) of a restaurant on Cedar Avenue. Their Chicago-style dog is the best in town--its onions the freshest, its pickled sport peppers the brightest green, its pickles the crunchiest. And the Wienery leaves the mustard on the side, so customers aren't over- or underwhelmed by... More »

Those who love big, sumptuous hot dogs know exactly what goes into making them: beef, pig knuckles, Sasquatch meat, compost, industrial-strength artery-clogging juice, and a whole lotta love. But here at this tasty West Bank dive, you can get even more than that. How much is that doggie in the window? With a side of fresh French-press coffee and French fries, it's still less than the price of the Lipitor you'll need after eating to your heart's content. Vienna beef dogs come encased by a... More »
Stroll into this West Bank institution and you'll soon know the difference between the salted roadkill that passes for hot dogs in too many other joints and the succulent Vienna beef that the Wienery jams into its casings. The meat is pithy, juicy, and eminently flavorful. But the unpretentious proprietors here also know that true tubesteak transcendence requires a strong supporting cast and have accordingly filled their menu board with a surfeit of mouthwatering options. We often opt for... More »
If you look into your heart of hearts, you'll be forced to admit that McDonald's fries really aren't all that great anymore. You do know that, don't you? Granted, they used to, but it all ended during the Bush era when they stopped adding beef tallow to their oil, and now their fries are as tasteless as every other batch of pre-frozen taters cooked up at every other fast-food emporium. If you're not going to use tallow, the only way to render excellent French fries is to age special... More »
