Description

There's a glut of "Fresh Mex" options in and around Fort Lauderdale, but the Whole Enchilada is a welcome addition to the fold. This fast eatery has a quirky, personalized feel, from the vintage books that decorate the high-up shelves to the kooky movies the staff plays during lunch and dinner hours. The food shares the same homey sensibility, occupying a space somewhere between Tex-Mex and Baja Mex. The tacos are knockouts - seared Mahi Mahi is seasoned perfectly and put to bed in a swatch of cilantro crema-spiked cabbage along with shredded jack cheese, tomato, and hearty slices of avocado; black tiger shrimp get the same treatment and are just as good. Fans of big-ass burritos can rest easy knowing TWE shares their gluttonous muse; in this case a rice-, bean-, cheese-, salsa-, and avocado-filled beast named The Bob that comes with a choice of juicy grilled chicken, steak, ground beef, or deliciously seared tofu. The option to replace your bovine sour cream with vegan-friendly tofu sour cream costs just $.50 extra. Just about everything you can order comes with newly fried tortilla chips for dipping in complimentary salsas, a unique selection of cantina style, spicy mango, roasted tomato, and a smooth-but-not-too-spicy rojo.

You're left feeling as empty as your burrito. But with tofu seared on the grill and prepared with the same diligence and attention to taste as the beef, chicken, and fish, the fresh-Mex joint the Whole Enchilada could placate the most stubborn of meat eaters. The hearty tofu "Hasselhoff" taco marries... More »
