CLOSED - The U is a fitting name, given the restaurant's proximity to the Saint Louis University campus, and the sandwich-intensive menu even features a course-catalogue motif. The reuben is at the head of the U's class (though it's not served on the customary rye bread), with the exact right ratio of shaved corned beef to sauerkraut. The chicken ranch club offers a peppery sauce and fried onion straws while the hot Italian beef sandwich pairs very thin meat with banana peppers and spicy, tart giardiniera sauce. Bar hoppers and insomniacs take note: The U is open till 3:30 a.m.
On Saturday, September 11, Midtown nosh pit The U hosted a competition to see who could record the best time wolfing down its "Graduate," which consists of two beef patties, four strips of bacon, two ... More »
Gut Check has given up its long-standing opposition to eating contests and challenges because, hey, 50 million Elvis fans can't be wrong. Besides, we like Midtown's The U (3108 Olive Street, 314-371-1... More »
As an adult I've come to prefer Christmas Eve to the holiday itself. Christmas Day peaks too soon, the presents opened and clucked over before breakfast. Christmas Eve lingers like the finish of a fine Bordeaux, a quiet anticipation, suffused... More »
God knows how I survived my first two years of college. And I don't mean surviving the usual existential doubts that befall English majors. You know: "Who am I? What is the meaning of life? Why did I buy a box of Trojans when the health clinic... More »
The saga of loft district restaurant and bar Red (1130 Washington Avenue) continues. As my colleague Kristen Hinman reported ("Seeing Red," March 5, 2008), onetime partners Derek Onstott and Kirk Apazeller are feuding over who owns Red, with both... More »
Only two years into its operation, the U is famous far beyond midtown for its mouthwatering selection of hamburgers, hot wings and griddled sandwiches served well into the wee hours (3:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday!). In January the U launched a successful foray into breakfast and brunch options, dishing up omelets, pancakes and some of the city's most potent sausage gravy. Every item is built to satisfy, though you'll need to accept that it's the kind of place that implies an unspoken... More »
The U has a winning reputation for slinging up hot sandwiches into the wee small hours (witness last year's pick for Best Place for Late-Night Dining), but the midtown joint does more than just sizzle sammies on its flattop grill. The fries at the U come with a bevy of options: plain, with cheese sauce, or with housemade ranch dressing and crumbled bacon. All are great accompaniments to any sandwich or perfect for a late-night snack, but it's the "loaded" cheese fries -- cheese sauce,... More »
It is a universally acknowledged truth that a night owl with the munchies must be in need of cheese fries. Jane Austen said something along those lines, and who are we to argue? It is also a universally acknowledged truth that late-night diners aren't exactly gunning for salads and smoothies when the clock strikes midnight -- it's gotta be hot, greasy, even a little bit sloppy. The U, located on the eastern edge of Saint Louis University's campus and within stumbling distance of a few... More »
It is a universally acknowledged truth that a night owl with the munchies must be in need of cheese fries. Jane Austen said something along those lines, and who are we to argue? It is also a universally acknowledged truth that late-night diners aren't exactly gunning for salads and smoothies when the clock strikes midnight — it's gotta be hot, greasy, even a little bit sloppy. The U, located on the eastern edge of Saint Louis University's campus and within stumbling distance of a few fly nightclubs, fills a much-needed gap in non-fast food options for late-night eating. Open until 3:30 a.m., the spot serves up the aforementioned cheese fries (available topped with chili, bacon and/or ranch dressing) as well as a course catalog of grill-top sandwiches that are wonderfully, messily overstuffed. School's in session, and the re-education of your stomach begins at the U.
Burgers and beer, open late.
The Cheese Fries with bacon and ranch are crazy but for the price tou should get a larger amount
