Description

While this bar's name might be inspired by Dashiell Hammett's detective novel, the Thin Man feels more like a modern-day joint in Brooklyn or the East Village than some film-noir relic. The narrow space is stuffed with countless depictions of Jesus, and Christmas lights provide a major source of illumination in the dim bar, making this a place where merry gentlemen -- and women -- can rest for hours on end, imbibing from the stellar lineup of brews, wines and infused vodkas. The patrons are as eclectic as the decor, and just as entertaining. Praise Jesus!

  • 2010 | Best Free Movie Series

The tiny, intimate Ubisububi Room, in the basement of the Thin Man, has quietly become home to the best free film series in town. Curated by Gio and Carmela Toninelo, the Ubisububi has turned Wednesday nights into a chance to see programs featuring everything from sci-fi classics to indie romances, frequently with a seasonal twist (expect to see horror movies come Halloween). The siblings' deep appreciation of cinema and eclectic tastes keep the selections fresh and engaging, balancing... More »

  • 2005 | Best Bohemian Bar

This saloon's name recalls both Bob Dylan and Dashiell Hammett, and its regulars are likely to be familiar with both. The Thin Man draws a funky sample of Capitol Hill's creative population, including local musicians, artists and filmmakers; book clubs and art collectives come here to brainstorm or plan their Burning Man installations. A former auto garage, the Man packs them all in with signature cocktails (the pineapple vodka is a special treat), a nice selection of beer and wine, and a... More »

  • 2003 | Best Place to Get a Whiskey, Up, With No Bullshit

Here's the straight skinny: When you arrive at the Thin Man, you may have this narrow bar to yourself. But sit awhile, and other people are bound to show up. We've found ourselves sharing the bar with bikers and think-tank types, drunken poets, the young and the restless, the old and the restless, and at least one professional bounty hunter on the mend. The one thing all these disparate characters had in common: a serious interest in just drinking. No one goes here for a fashion show; it's... More »

This is neither a chill place to go on the weekend nor a younger crowd. I'd say it usually has people in their 30s and 40s and they all seem to be loud. During the week is when I like to go here. The bartenders are some of my favorite people since moving here and it's a little more relaxing. If you want to meet and chat with someone, go around 4pm. If it's too loud, go next door to St. Mark's (same owner) and order a sandwich.

The crowd ranges from Hipsters to 'Suits' and many of them live within walking distance of Thin Man. In either case the people are interesting. The place is small, but it works. There's no cover to get in.
