This traditional American diner - a little piece of the old-school Telephone Road - caters to the early birds rather than the night owls. Tel-Wink Grill will serve you breakfast whenever you want it, as long as you want it before 2:30 p.m., which is when they close. The prices seem to have ignored inflation since the place first opened in the 1950's, and they probably serve a lot of the same dishes, too -- bacon 'n' eggs, pancakes, chicken fried steak, waffles, grits, and homemade hash browns. If you get there around 10 a.m., be ready for a long but reasonably quick-moving line.

You could go for a biscuit, but don't eat more than two or you'll sleep through lunch. More »
Mel's Country Cafe is a family-run establishment off the beaten path in Tomball that delivers on all the name implies. Diner tables fill the ranch house and add to the comfort factor when you step in. A 16-ounce chicken-fried steak anchors a menu that offers home-style victuals like greens, fried okra and catfish. The servers operate with a relaxed ease about them that you'd expect to find in the Tomball area. What could be homier than that? More »
