Description

The Swallow's Inn, located near the Mission San Juan Capistrano, represents a bit of an anomaly in Orange County. There aren't many honky-tonks in the area, but if you're going to check out such a watering hole in the land of citrus, the Swallow's Inn is worth the drive. Small, with dark wooden tables and high chairs, it's not uncommon to see cowboy boots, big buckles and Stetson hats crowding the dance floor. The Swallow's boasts a full bar, as well as a nice selection of bottled beers and eight brews on tap. Yet what makes the Swallow's Inn special isn't the booze; it's the live entertainment occurring almost every night. The small stage hosts a bevy of up-and-coming national and local country acts. Even if you consider yourself less than a fan of country, we defy you stay off the dance floor--especially after you've had a couple of beers and a shot of Jack Daniel's.

  • 2009 | Best Neighborhood Bar/South OC

South County's most famous bar is a modern-day honky-tonk where the patrons come from a neighborhood that's less geographic than it is psychic. It takes a certain kind of 52-year-old man to go out in public wearing a cowboy hat and a vest but no shirt--and it takes a certain kind of prude to not enjoy a night of cheap beer, fast fiddles and drunken conversation with the aforementioned gritty, graying cowboy.
