This cheekily named meat-and-fish joint is the sophomore venture from two of the founders of the Town Talk Diner in Minneapolis, so expect a similarly playful attitude. The dark, clubby digs inside a historic Dayton's Bluff building recall St. Paul's gangster days and make it a perfect spot to sip a sidecar and take in the view of downtown. The restaurant's signature dish is a locally raised, grass-fed strip steak. Chef J.D. Fratzke, formerly of Muffuletta, sources his meat from humane purveyors--even more reason to order the impossibly flavorful braised pork shank. The menu is wide-ranging enough to include foie gras and Braunschweiger, though it doesn't offer much for vegetarians.
When dining at the Strip Club Meat and Fish, a diner needs a strategy. It's best to bring a couple of friends, people who are good at pacing themselves, and attack the menu. Order a pile of small plat... More »
Though it happens without fail every year, the temperature dip always seems to throw everyone for a loop. Co-workers obnoxiously compare notes on how long it takes them to scrape their windshields. Pa... More »
For all of the great advances and trends in local dining in recent years--fusion, small plates, exquisitely crafted platings, molecular gastronomy--for many meat-loving foodies there is still no exper... More »
After penning his colorfully eloquent letter in support of gay marriage, Chris Kluwe has been everywhere. From CNN to peddling his own line of T-shirts to the cover of Out magazine, Kluwe has taken f... More »
Ever on the cutting edge of the craft cocktail revolution, the Strip Club Meat & Fish has added two new drinks to its menu. The drinks are versions of summer favorites experienced bar-goers have l... More »
Taking your mom to the Strip Club might sound like a questionable way to drop a couple of bucks. But she's a hip ol' gal. She can take it. While informing her that she's headed to this restaurant with the risqué name might add a new gray hair or two, she'll find upon entering that there is nothing not to love. It's often owner Tim Niver who graciously greets you at the door. Dan Oskey produces the finest cocktails with astonishing speed and a dash of his sweet smile. The service is... More »
You can load up a buffet with all the sad, flat pancakes and ham carving stations you like, but we all know that does not a good brunch make. What we truly want from that blessed Sunday late-morning meal is to gather together and discuss the previous night's activities, cram in all varieties of sweet and savory carbohydrates, and, of course, enjoy a damn good bloody Mary. With dishes like Strip Club's glorious Logger's Tower (pancakes, ham, and eggs, flavored with rosemary and scallions and... More »
The Strip Club Meat & Fish proves that excellent service doesn't have to come with a ram-up-the-rear stiffness. The serving staff is full of good-looking faces quick with a smile and knowing nod of the head. Many of them have been with the team since it opened. Tim Niver, part owner, is ever present, handling everything from greeting guests to mixing drinks to running food. Dan Oskey rules behind the bar and keeps a running inventory of guests' favorite drinks, often remembering a... More »
So you think this contemporary cocktail trend is strictly for metrosexuals -- that real men should drink whiskey and martinis? We dare you to get over to the Strip Club Meat & Fish and throw down a Cobra Kai. True, it arrives in a compact, slender glass, not nearly as big as you'd expect, frothy with egg whites on the top. But don't let that fool you. That first sip is packed with habanero bitters and tart acidity that goes straight to the back of the throat, ripping into tender... More »
The Strip Club in St. Paul isn't the kind of carnivore heaven where you're seated near a rowdy table of Cosby-sweatered louts and leave with a char stench clinging to your hair and clothes. In fact, you're more likely to head home with a new favorite drink from the creative bartenders. The meat is different too. Grass-fed beef from Thousand Hills in Cannon Falls makes for a more full-flavored taste of the three options diners choose from: a New York strip, filet mignon, or hanger steak. Then... More »
You know the rumors about strip clubs serving great steaks? Well, we haven't done too much research on the subject, but there's only one place we've found those notions to be true: the Strip Club in St. Paul, which fortunately happens to not be that sort of strip club at all. The clubby neighborhood restaurant's signature Strip Steak is grass-fed beef from Thousand Hills. Ordered medium rare, the meat has a weathered crust and a ruby core that's as smooth as ahi tuna, with a clean, juicy... More »
High on a bluff on the east side of St. Paul sits a magical place. Housed in a brownstone dating back to the late 1800s, with an iron lantern lighting the entrance, the Strip Club is reminiscent of a speakeasy, where the best bartender in town is waiting to fix you a lil' something nice. Dan Oskey, the ever-gracious man behind the bar, believes a drink should be complicated, melodious, and, as he states, "should almost tell you a story and have a beginning, middle, and an end." He... A steak place might not seem like much of a neighborhood cafe, but, well, neither does a strip club. But when it's the Strip Club--capital S, capital C, and named after its premium, grass-fed strip steak--it qualifies. That's because the friendly eatery in the former home of a 100-year-old grocery store has breathed new life into St. Paul's sleepy Dayton's Bluff. The place has cultivated a welcoming, Cheers-like camaraderie, due in part to the force of personality of co-owners... More »
This place has the best grass fed beef, local vegetables all with sustainable farming. Their fish is wonderful, too. If you want a great steak, then check this place out!
I love this place. It has a great view of downtown St. Paul and the chef is one of the best in MN!
