There are a lot of places claiming to be "pubs" around Houston, but few actually pull off an authentic vibe without throwing in the frat towel. Count the Stag's Head, right across Portsmouth from Cactus Music, as one of the places in town doing pub life right. The bar has a cozy, compartmentalized attitude where you can disappear into a dark corner almost any hour of the day to drink and watch a game or two. In fact, during the most recent World Cup season, Stag's Head was a teeming mass of suds and shouting during matches. Their food is exceptional, with the Jamaican Jerk wings a real standout. All the local beers are on tap, even the limited-edition brews fresh from the Saint Arnold's brewery.
You'll notice several things upon entering a British pub for the first time, especially if your only pub experiences to date have been in the States: The pubs are clean, bright and welcoming. The food... More »
We stopped into The Stag's Head on a Monday afternoon craving an ice-cold Strongbow and a low-key scene, and we got just that. The spacious pub was practically empty except for an older gentleman with... More »
Recently, I stopped by Sugarbaby's Cupcake Boutique on a Saturday in the hopes of trying a Caramel Delight cupcake. Unsurprisingly, one hour before closing they were out of Caramel Delight and almost... More »
What could be better than two pork sausages wrapped with puff pastry, two scoops of mashed potatoes covered with brown gravy and a pile of English peas? Chasing it all down with a cold pint of beer, t... More »
The Stag's Head Pub (2128 Portsmouth, 713-521-2333) is a warm, comfortable place to celebrate a friend's getting out of a cold, uncomfortable place with some inappropriately heavy Monday-night drinking. Mike (new nickname: Short Timer) had spent... More »
If the downtown sausage-fest or the jock-stock in the village are not your cup of tea, the Stag's Head and their quality-over-quantity beer selection can be a haven for hopheads. Rather than trying to carry as many beers as possible or using gimmicks, they put some thought into the beers they pour, including Belhaven, Full Sail Pale Ale and Fuller's ESB. With plenty of beer specials and good food, they even make a decent cocktail. Unlike many beer joints around town, the Stag does more than just pull a beer into a pint glass and charge you more for it than a gallon of gas.
a chill spot with really nice people. :]
I like this pub and used to be a regular years ago. It had a pretty laid back vibe then. I need to stop by for an updated visit to determine if I still like it. I used to crave a fried shrimp or maybe it was a crawfish poboy.

Any Irish or English transplant would be right at home at The Stag's Head, where the bangers and mash and fish 'n' chips measure up to the exacting standards of the old country. Competing with them are American finger-food favorites: fajita nachos and stuffed jalapeños as well as succulent Angus burgers and a bevy of fine sandwiches. But The Stag's Head soars beyond those standbys with modern offerings that raise the, uh, bar for any self-respecting pub. Try their savory soups of the... More »
