Description

The Soma Center has been an answered prayer for vegetarians, vegans, raw foodists, and fair trade/organic coffee fans in the Lake Worth environs since Scott Brown and friends took over a defunct ice cream and candy store in 2007 and turned it into the hippest thing happening - a tiny, laid-back café fronted by a yoga studio. Apart from marvelous gourmet smoothies, fair-trade organic coffees and pots of loose-leaf tea, organic yogurt and granola, and home-baked vegan cookies (the smell of cinnamon drifts down the block most mornings), they serve a lunch menu of cozy sandwiches and small plates - PB&J (or PB& honey with bananas), hummus, homemade vegan soups, free-range chicken salad, olive tapenade plate, and a daily raw vegan food special that might include Mediterranean cabbage wraps or walnut paté-stuffed tomato followed by banana cream pie and berry berry cheesecake. Wireless access is free in the café.

We'd like to say he was a permanent convert to whole foods, but back home in New York he was instantly swallowed up again by a fleet of hot-dog carts. Still, he was our acid test, and we too occasionally find ourselves pondering the possibility -- as we spoon up our bowl of quinoa soup or bite... More »
