Description

Housed in a funky old storefront, this aptly named downtown club is one of the city's few all-ages live-music venues. Run by a clique of volunteers with a punk-inspired DIY philosophy, the Smell features arty, punky, freaky and experimental indie combos. Most shows are $5. All ages. No booze. No phone. www.thesmell.org

    Event Review: Psycho de Mayo

"RUINS alone" are one of the key inventors of math rock in Japan, active since the 80's. They have influenced John Zorn, who helped import the art form to the west. Most math rock artists (Battles, Deerhoof, Mike Patton, etc.) have a respect for the RUINS and credit them as one of their influences.

    A must see!

  • 2009 | BEST ALL-AGES VENUE

With all due respect to Echo Curio, host to a consistently compelling combination of outsider art both audio and visual, Jim Smith's The Smell remains the single best venue for showgoers of all ages to experience not only the music of their peers, but that of some bona fide legends, to boot. Despite its rising profile, the downtown venue has kept admission cheap (almost always $5) and its M.O. intact: to play host to the noisiest, messiest, most genreless and generally outside-of-the-box...
