This isn't just a bakery/cereal bar -- it's a labor of love and a community staple, opening its doors wide for block parties, fashion shows and art exhibits. And even when there aren't additional entertainment offerings, the Shoppe has plenty to keep you amused: dozens of cereal choices that you can top with marshmallows, M&Ms, caramel, chocolate chips and almonds (among other things), as well as seasonal fruit and specialty combinations. (Golden Grahams with chocolate chips and marshmallows make up the S'mores combination bowl, for example.) The cupcakes also come in a plethora of flavors, with a handful of vegan options; they're all utterly delicious, from the first lick of icing down to the last crumb.

Frosted, sprinkle-dusted cupcakes aren't the only delights lurking in the case at this retro, pink-and-black bakery on East Colfax Avenue. Individual pies, roughly the size of a muffin cup, are sold daily, and not just in a few flavors like apple and cherry. Strawberry-rhubarb, peach-rhubarb and jumble berry are three of the biggest sellers, but we like the banana cream, too, with a buttery graham-cracker crust, a thin layer of bananas, and swirls of caramel-drizzled whipped cream. Too many... More »
Bars are great places for hanging out and imbibing with friends, but when alcohol isn't on the agenda, why not catch up over huge mugs of coffee, bowls of custom-mixed cereal and a couple of gourmet cupcakes? The Shoppe welcomes visitors until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights; Tuesday through Thursday, you can grab a treat until 10 p.m. Not only are the cupcakes super-tasty, but the clean, mod interior is comfy enough for a long chat or a solo night out (there are shelves of zines, books... The Shoppe's master cupcake baker, Emma Lee Bettina Rose Skala (better known as Emma Rose), earned her BFA from Alfred University and has a background in ceramic art -- both of which surely come in handy when she's artfully sculpting her delicious little cakelets. She starts with flavors as scandalously rich as Double Chocolate Kahlua or as hip as Mojito or Strawberry Champagne, then tops that with every custom theme imaginable, from a dinosaur to a lifelike mound of violets.
