Alastair Nisbet has reinvented his Tower Grove East gastropub to feature rustic American cuisine such as barbecue and chili. Tender and tasty smoked meats include baby-back ribs and St. Louis-cut spare ribs, pulled pork and chicken. The restaurant's four chilis - including one made with the fearsome bhut jolokia chile, possibly the hottest in existence - are available individually or as a sampler. Fans of the original Shaved Duck menu should know that the beloved duck confit and duck-fat frites remain. The beer selection, featuring four revolving draft beers and an extensive selection of American craft brews by the bottle, is one of the city's best.
As a commenter astutely pointed out, The Shaved Duck (2900 Virginia Avenue; 314-776-1407) is hardly an unknown restaurant. Still, it isn't simply a barbecue joint -- heck, in its original incarnation,... More »
Our call for nominations for St. Louis' most underrated barbecue yielded both traditional barbecue joints as well as restaurants that happen to serve excellent 'cue (or so you say). We waived our arbi... More »

Where do you find the beer list in most St. Louis restaurants? On the last page of the wine list ā if you're lucky. More often than not, it exists only in your server's brain. It's not too tough, after all, to commit to memory a "selection" of Bud, Bud Light and Bud Select. A server might try to memorize the beer list at the Shaved Duck. A photographic memory would help. The new gastropub in Tower Grove East stocks a terrific selection of beers. It's not the longest in town, but it's curated with great care. American craft beers are featured, from local folks like Schlafly and O'Fallon to industry "giants" like Bell's, New Belgium and Anchor Steam to lesser-known but not lesser lights like Charleville and North Coast. There are only four taps, but the restaurant rotates in new brews with some regularity ā all the more reason to return again and again.
Best smoked meats around town. Shaved Duck is great for something different from the average american restaurant.
