The GLBT-owned and operated Saloon has been a Twin Cities fixture for over three decades, offering an entertainment repertoire that caters to everyone from casual pubgoers to bear enthusiasts to diehard party boys. Traditional pursuits like karaoke and house-heavy DJ nights are augmented by more unique offerings like go-go "shower dancers" and Glee viewing nights. While the bar is a popular party focus, a recently added lounge section in the back of the building gives a more relaxed alternative to the crowded dancefloor.
With DJ sets by Noise, Nitrogen, Fenris, DV8, Nightstalker, more; performance by the Minneapolis Fire Collective, Zyra, Mistress Jean Bardot. 18+.
Event Review: Goth Prom IX: Apocalypse
The end of the world is best observed with celebration! One of the best free 18+ dance nights in town, Hard Mondays and the Saloon present this year’s Goth Prom.
Industrial Club DJ END: the DJ from California guest stars, along with local regular DJs Noise and Nitrogen, DJ Fenris, and DJ DV8 - among them spinning Rhythmic Noise, Aggrotech, Hardstyle, EBM, Industrial, Goth, and Death-rock. Be there at 10 PM so you don’t miss aerial acrobatics by A-Frame and Zyra of The Stomping Ground circus school. This community-organized event also offers fervid, millinarian decor and games of skill, with proceeds benefitting The Aliveness Project.
Prizes come from local and national retail sponsors including Magus Books & Herbs, vintage shop Tatters, Rick Bronson's House of Comedy, Eye of Horus, punk boutique Errant Gear, alt clothing website Cryoflesh, local label Shinto Records, Monster Ink Tattoo, Hair Police, Twin Cities Magic and Costume, Clubhouse Jäger, and more.

Last fall, Minneapolis hosted its first SlutWalk, a multi-city march/protest where folks are invited to put on high heels, fishnet stockings, short skirts, and other purportedly skanky evening wear for a short walk. The goal of the those marching... More »
With gay marriage continuing to be hot-button issue in Minnesota, especially with next year's ballot, it's a good time for a show like Parallel Lives. The piece, crafted by Mo Gaffney and Kathy Najimy, played Off-Broadway for eight years before... More »
The Saloon is a kick-ass bar that never shies away from being, first and foremost, a kick-ass gay bar. While other joints in the area have been co-opted by the 394/494/694 crowd--visitors who seem to venture downtown only for the kink factor--the Saloon has continued to expand and grow while keeping its roots in sight. The security, though not menacing, is tight enough to keep away the kinds of problems that have begun to haunt other downtown nightspots. The dance floor is fairly... More »
Let's face it: The contenders for this category have nothing on the Saloon. The rude security people at the Gay 90's have more sass than the Adam's-appled divas belting out Diana Ross songs onstage. The yuppie patrons at Jetset look like they just walked out of a Bret Easton Ellis novel. The street scum who slime their way into the Brass Rail probably style their hair with motor oil. And so we find ourselves constantly falling back on our favorite Hennepin Avenue bar, where, for the past... More »
Okay, so this category is a bit misleading. Everyone knows that the best way to meet gay men is through friends or at parties or through various leisure activities. But let's say you're feeling old, fat, unloved, in need of a self-esteem boost. Then welcome to the Saloon--a.k.a. "Old Faithful." This is one place you need never leave alone. The way men deny that they patronize this Twin Cities landmark, you'd think it would have gone out of business years ago. But the downtown dive still... More »
The scene at the Gay 90's just hasn't been the same since hordes of heterosexuals discovered the La Femme drag revue. And certainly, there are newer, perhaps more elegant bars catering to a gay male clientele, like the posh Boom on East Hennepin. But there's just something comfortable about the Saloon, an institution here since the 1970s. You certainly won't find any bachelorette parties staggering through here. But you will find a friendly atmosphere and some delicious people-watching.... More »
