Why is the Royale everyone's favorite place to kick back? Could it be the comfy wooden booths or the St. Louis-themed cocktails? The hardback book menus or the framed pictures of cultural heroes like Abe Lincoln and JFK? The backyard patio with freestanding fireplace and koi pond, or the fans made of tires? Perhaps it's all of the above, complemented by local DJs spinning hits old and new. The Royale is unique, a place where those passionate about St. Louis gather to discuss policy and politics - and music and city living and maybe a little boxing, too - while sipping swank cocktails and eating good food. The burgers are excellent, none more so than the "Royale," a carnivore's delight of premium Wagyu beef from Down Under. Other standouts include smoked brisket tacos and a terrific roast-beef sandwich with garlic aioli. Several dishes made with locally produced Match Meat are available for vegetarians and vegans. So go ahead and meet your friends -- they're probably already here.

For the past 139 years, on the first Saturday in May, women have donned obnoxiously large hats and sipped mint juleps, men have bet their hard earned money, and three-year-old thoroughbreds have sped ... More »
The Veggielante has had it up to here with people bitching that St. Louis restaurants are vegetarian unfriendly. Sure, we'd like to see more restaurants offering more meatless dishes, but there are ex... More »

The Royale has won respect for many things: its elegant Kentucky Derby parties, its cocktails and pleasant back patio. But the kitchen holds a secret known to regular patrons: The fish tacos are lip-smackin' scrumptious. The catfish fillets are crispified in a golden tortilla-chip breading that's seasoned with cumin, which leaves a pleasant smokiness to mingle with a creamy chipotle aioli. Cabbage and pico de gallo counterbalance all this rich weight with freshness, and everything's held in... More »
Whether it's July, January or some month in between, it's always a good time to drink in the Royale's back yard. The area is largely shaded in the summer and features a small fountain, both of which help to counteract the effects of the booze you probably shouldn't be drinking during a heat advisory. For the winter months and in cool evenings, there's a fire pit, which, in addition to providing warmth, also offers a lovely setting for meeting nice folks. The patio is just far enough away... Many a pale and frozen St. Louisan will cower from Old Man Winter by hiding indoors. Others will head to the Royale to warm those chilled toes and fingers 'round the brick fire pit out back. Bundled up on wooden benches, complete strangers often get to chatting and growing jolly. It doesn't hurt that the bartenders are serving seasonal drinks such as the Obama-inspired "Hot Hope Toddy" (bourbon mixed with hot water, honey, clove, lemon and cinnamon) and the "U.S. Mint" (hot chocolate with... The Royale's signature burger is called, fittingly enough, "the Royale." You know what they call "the Royale" in France? No, really -- what do they call it? (We dropped French after one semester.) According to Yahoo!'s Babel Fish app, you'd ask for huit ounces de boeuf de Wagyu d'Australie. That's half a pound of beef from the revered Wagyu cattle – the breed so esteemed in Japan that farmers treat the cows like, well, royalty. Important: Order "the Royale" rare (or, at most,... More »
Bloody marys are so damn cocky: "Look at me! Not only am I deliciously alcoholic, but my tomato-juice base and celery swizzle stick make me nutritious, to boot!" Well, Bloody M., we hate to break it to you, but there's a new anti-oxidizing alcohol in town: the Subcontinental. The mad geniuses at the Royale have mixed up a martini of gin, freshly juiced cucumbers, Cointreau and lime, with a thick slice o' cuke for a garnish. Its ridiculously refreshing flavor is a cross-section of produce... More »
The Royale, which is quickly becoming one of the hippest bars in St. Louis, is the brainchild of fedora-wearing man about town Steve Smith. Smith purchased the watering hole (formerly known as the Real Bar) in April and quickly dispensed with the adornments that had made the place popular among fans of electronic darts and the band Little Feat. To fill the void, Smith introduced an eclectic menu (including the town's only Kobe beef hamburger) and all manner of drink concoctions made with the... More »
