Quite literally a home away from home, this trendy spot occupies the historic Farish House located in the heart of the downtown Phoenix arts district. Indie rockers and artist folks always seem to find their way to this popular spot for a break from the monthly First Friday madness or on a Sunday evening to mix and mingle amidst the vintage atmosphere while hepcat DJs spin up their record collections. Run by renowned restaurateurs Matt and Erenia Pool, the tavern features a lengthy list of 45 different craft and specialty brews in bottles and an assortment of regional varieties on tap -- including the Four Peaks-created honey brown house beer -- and a rotating seasonal selection for those that like to change it up. Not a beer drinker? Not a problem, as more than 20 wines are in stock, and the menu is filled with the Pool's quirky take on bar snacks and small plates, including a grilled cheese sammy filled with fontina and gruyere.

While the Roosevelt is an interesting place to get some cheese and wine, I don't care too much for the atmosphere. It feels like I'm walking into a private party without an invite every time I stop by.
Every good neighborhood bar has a few key things — a great selection of drinks, a fair pour, a great staff, and maybe a snack or three to help pace yourself. The Roosevelt has those essentials in spades, plus a couple of others for good measure, like a gorgeous building, lovingly restored, and the most wicked music choices around. We're not sure what we like more, the House Beer, brewed by Four Peaks and chilled with an argon cooling system so effective it'll bring tears to your eyes, or the deviled eggs that are so delicious they might trigger a war to see who gets the last one. These are important things, to be sure, so we'll be content to ponder them as we listen to old Radiohead songs that make us long for the carefree days of youth. Good thing the staff always remembers our names; they'll need them to nudge us out of our nostalgic haze. No matter, because The Roosevelt is, most importantly, a neighborhood bar, and a reminder that downtown is for livin', not just driving through. We'll ponder that, too, as we ride our bikes home from our favorite local bar.
So far, we haven't been feeling the so-called "gastropubs" that have shown up on the scene this year -- they all seem like a trickle-down trend, inspired by something that blew up in other major cities (but not here) years ago. But you know what? The Roosevelt has been pretty much a gastropub all along, even though owner Matt Pool would never call it that. Technically, this place is a bar that serves food, not a straight-up restaurant. (You'll see what we mean if you attempt to dine... More »
Wait, we know what you're thinking: bar food? Who goes out for that? Um, we do -- at least when that bar is The Roosevelt. Since they serve only stellar craft brews, imports, and interesting wines here, it makes sense that the eats would be equally top-notch. And considering the impeccable taste of the owners (Matt and Erenia Pool, of Matt's Big Breakfast fame), we wouldn't expect anything less. For their menu of snacks and sandwiches, they've sourced the best of the best --... Thank you, Matt Pool, for establishing yet another kickass downtown hang. The owner/chef of Matt's Big Breakfast opened the smashing Roosevelt Tavern in late December 2006 to better serve the downtown eatin' and drinkin' crowd. Among the 20 selections of wines and 45 beer choices is the Roosevelt House Beer, a perfect concoction exclusively created for the tavern by Tempe's famed Four Peaks Brewery. The irresistible pale ale contains delicate fruit flavors such as grapefruit and an... What we love about the food at this cool downtown tavern is how quirky and unexpected it is. (It's not unlike the watering hole itself, which resides in a restored, century-old house, where indie rock blares from the sound system and craft brews flow from the taps.) If your idea of bar food is fries, greasy pizza, and hot wings, you're in for a surprise. Owner Matt Pool's notion of what goes well with beer is pretty eclectic, from top-notch deviled eggs and chips with homemade dips to kicky... More »
We love The Roosevelt. Great décor, beer, wine, and food -- it was a no-brainer to add it to our rotation when Matt Pool opened for business last year. We don't always love the line for the, ahem, facilities, in which we inevitably find ourselves after a couple of rounds of libations. Sure, you can always strike up a diversionary conversation while in line, but when it's time to go, it's time to go. It took only a couple of visits to discover the holy grail in the back patio,...
