Nestled along the Camelback Corridor is The Ritz-Carlton. More of a small town in itself than a mere resort, it contains a 281-room hotel, Dove Mountain Golf Club, a fitness center, a heated outdoor pool, a sundeck, and three dining options: a bistro, a lounge, and a bar. The main restaurant, bistro 24, has earned the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator Magazine two years in a row. To pair with the exceptional list of red and white vino, the restaurant offers breakfast items like steel cut oatmeal brûlée, lunch sandwiches like crab cake and beef tenderloin, and dinners like veal osso bucco and lamb tenderloin. Happy hour is a must with $5 bar bites and drinks, including fried cheddar cheese curd with whole grain mustard aioli, truffle fries, sommelier’s wine of the day, and Bejeweled Bling (tequila, Cointreau, prickly pear). Not your kind of drink? The Ritz-Carlton also has a stellar afternoon tea Wednesday through Saturday with English tea service, finger sandwiches, fresh-baked scones, and French pastries – children always welcome.
Father's Day tends to pale in comparison to May's Mother's Day, but there's no reason not to go all-out for both -- especially if that means taking Dad to a metro Phoenix restaurant (or comedy club!)... More »
Who's this year's master mixologist, top chef, and most outstanding restaurant concept? Last night, the Arizona Restaurant Association (ARA) put a name to them all -- as well as a few other categories... More »
When Facebook went public back in May, the giddy geeks were all too eager to buy up some shares. That is, until the stock fell flat and shareholders filed a suit against Mark Zuckerberg's brainchild and a bunch of Wall Street suits. Perhaps that... More »
What is it about the holiday season that makes people want to put on their Sunday best, drink champagne, and pretend that habitually consuming PBRs and burritos in jeans and tees isn’t the norm? Between holiday parties, family get-togethers, and... More »
The Restaurant, the Ritz-Carlton, 2401 East Camelback, Phoenix, 468-0700. Hours: Lunch, Monday through Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Most of us nine-to-fivers look forward to the lunch break, but not because it's the day's culinary high... More »
The Ritz-Carlton often requests the pleasure of our company at its afternoon tea, served in the Lobby Lounge from noon 'til 3 Wednesday through Saturday. And we're eager to oblige! For a meager $36 per person, a full-on, super-elegant English tea hosted by Tea Maitre d' Jeffrey Hattrick is ours. Three courses are served -- finger sandwiches, fresh-baked scones, and French pastries -- all prepared right at the Ritz and all designed to make one feel ever-so-British Royal. Exclusive... More »
We used to think that afternoon tea was strictly for blue-haired old ladies and British expats pining for their homeland -- that is, until we partook of tea service at the Ritz. It has all the relaxation benefits of a spa treatment, without the creepy touchy-feely stuff. For $35 (plus tax and gratuity), you get tea sandwiches, an assortment of bite-size desserts, and sweet cranberry white chocolate and buttermilk scones with fresh Devonshire cream that's so good you'd lick the last drop... We've had tea all over town, but no place spoils us like the Ritz. From the sweet valets to the tart lemon curd, every detail of the experience is spot-on, which is what you'd expect when you're paying big bucks for a sip of English Breakfast. It's worth every penny, as far as we're concerned, to perch on the edges of fancy furniture, pinky crooked just so, nibbling on scones and cucumber finger sandwiches -- the main character in our own fairy tale. Until The Plaza opens a Phoenix... More »
If you're tired of seeing the Suns lose, but you still want to see an NBA star in person, we've got just the place for you. We have it on insider knowledge that most visiting NBA teams and some NFL teams stay at one and only one hotel in Phoenix -- the Ritz-Carlton at Camelback and 24th Street. We've seen Phil Jackson in the bar, and we hear this is where Kobe Bryant gets his breakfast in bed when visiting Phoenix. Shaquille O'Neal may have even enjoyed the spa treatments here (before... More »
From the fragrant Summer Provence tea blend to the delicate chocolate cups holding the lemon curd and fresh whipped cream, it's all about attention to detail when it comes to afternoon tea at the Phoenix Ritz. And all that attention is bestowed by none other than Jeffrey Hattrick, the Ritz's resident tea sommelier. There's more than a bit of showmanship to his presentation (read all about it in our Sideshow profile, page 210) but suffice it to say, this man takes his tea very seriously... More »
If holding a stiff drink in your hand is more your cup of tea, then the Ritz-Carlton is for you. Around the world, the hotel chain is known for its signature, afternoon tea service. But on Thursday and Friday afternoons in Phoenix, the hotel's "salon de thé" takes a twist. Jeffrey, the Ritz-Carlton's tea master, has created a line of tea-infused cocktails and mar-tea-nis for the hotel's high-tea-turned-happy-hour, called "Tea with a Twist." When the traditional tea service ends at 5... More »
We are certain we detect just the hint of an English accent when we speak to Jeffrey Hattrick, the Tea Maître d' (yes, there is such a thing) at the Ritz. But Hattrick cheerfully admits that he hails from Portland, Oregon. No matter, we'd let him read our leaves any day -- he clearly knows his way around the tea pot. In fact, Hattrick tells us, he heads up tea service for the entire Ritz-Carlton chain. Lucky us. We put ourselves in Hattrick's capable hands, and he pours a lovely Earl... More »
If you can stand to vacate your lucky armchair on Saturdays and Sundays, you'll be rewarded handsomely -- if not with a win by your favorite pro or college football team, then at least with a pigskin party fit for an MVP. The Ritz's Executive Football Club boasts three big-screen plasma TVs, laptop computers for fantasy geeks, an all-you-can-eat "tailgate buffet" and complimentary drinks during the first quarter of each game, all for just $20 admission to the hotel's posh, mahogany-soaked... There's a nice shopping mall nearby, so it makes our location and the hotel stand out.
It's in a good area on Camelback across the street from a mall and close to a few good restaurants.
I love this hotel. It’s top of the line. It’s in a good location. You can walk to restaurants. There is a Morton’s right next to it and a Houston’s is also close. There is a great mall across the street with more restaurant choices.
