Description

Those with a yen for the outdoors can dine alfresco in sunken pods set along the perimeter of a Zen-like reflection pond. The cuisine is dubbed trans-ethnic, but except for a puzzling inclusion of Italian-style pizzas, the menu could more accurately be called trans-Asian - with main stopovers in Bangkok, Hong Kong, and New Delhi. Kurobuta pork, Japan's prized pig, is lushly flavored and bathed in char sui, a Chinese barbecue sauce redolent of honey and five spices. Diver scallops stir-fried with spicy XO sauce is another winner, as is duck consommé with a chicken wing plumped full of shrimp mousse. The Restaurant does lots of things well but needs to iron out some irksome quirks, but this is the best and priciest Chinese restaurant in town.

  • 2011 | Best Hotel Restaurant

Five things the Restaurant at the Setai offers that your favorite hotel restaurant might not: (1) An executive chef who, like the Setai's David Werly, trained under the incomparable Alain Ducasse. (2) A series of distinct kitchen stations -- grill, tandoori, wok, Peking duck, and so forth -- where chefs work in fully open view of the diners. That's entertainment! (3) Upscale, family-style renditions of multiple Asian cuisines, with menu items culled from China, Thailand, Singapore,... More »

  • 2009 | Best Place to Dine Alone

Screw the world. I mean, what a mess. Every single rotten human being on the planet is irredeemably greedy and corrupt -- except me and you, that is. Which is why we dine alone. Who wants to break bread with these bastards anyway And more to the point, fewer and fewer of them want to dine with us. That's all right. Pull up a plush leather chair at the Grill at the Setai's marble dining bar and sit your disgruntled bottom down; there is no restaurant in the city more soothingly... More »

  • 2006 | Best Restaurant Décor

To say this place looks like a million bucks would be to vastly underestimate the money invested. To describe in detail the gray stone walls tweaked with teak and bronze accents, expansive exhibition kitchen, lofty ceilings, plushly pillowed chairs, modern artwork, intricate woodwork, towering wine cabinets, and the other handsome attributes would not do The Setai justice, either. What wows is the way Asian sensibilities of simplicity and elegance are integrated so effusively into some... More »
