The Resort at Pelican Hill is the Irvine Co.'s magnum opus of luxury-a place purposely designed to give competitors like the St. Regis a run for their money and the rest of us a reason to work harder for ours. At Pelican Grill, its restaurant, expensive cars are lined up like trophies. Inside, there's a show kitchen worthy of Iron Chef America and a dining room populated with couture-wearing socialites. Out on the al fresco terrace, an elevated view of the shimmering Pacific makes you contemplate the world and your place in it. And, oh yeah, the food's good, too.

    There are two golf courses. There are holes on both courses that you feel like you’re looking over the ocean because you are. The clubhouse is so well-appointed, so over the top, it feels like a day spa for guys. Now, women are just as welcome, but for guys, it’s one of the few times guys sort of indulge themselves like that and Pelican Hill knows how to do it. From the time you drive up and valet park, it is obsessively devoted to making you happy. They know what they’re doing there.
