Marguerite Tram, the owner of this funky boutique across the breezeway from a garden shop and a hamburger joint in a cute strip mall near Phoenix College, has the best taste. She stuffs her little shop with linen dresses, comfortable shoes, cute purses, and a lovely collection of the best Mexican-inspired gifts and wares we've seen in town. We've looked high and low, and Purple Lizard -- a dear little boutique in west Phoenix packed with cute linen clothes, cuter bags, and spicy-sweet candles -- is the only place in town we could find that is currently selling the supplies you need for Dia de los Muertos, a.k.a. We love Purple Lizard for so many reasons. This is a true neighborhood shop -- we never go in without running into at least one person we know. We love Marguerite, the longtime owner, who remembers all our personal stories. Most of all, we love the merchandise. 2007 | BEST PLACE TO BUY MEXICAN FOLK ART

This upscale boutique in central Phoenix takes the prize in this category because it offers items we simply have never seen anywhere else. Sure, there's the expected mix of loteria games, Frida Kahlo replicas and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) figurines. But resting on a high shelf is a collection of true treasures -- wood statues of some of Latin America's most-revered santos, hand-carved and painted circa 1930. 2006 | BEST BOUTIQUE, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

We were bummed when The Gap on Mill Avenue went belly up, but it always makes us even sadder to see a small, independent business go under. That's why we're so happy to report that after many years in business, Purple Lizard is still going strong, tucked into a small, packed space at the intersection of 15th Avenue and Thomas Road. We love Purple Lizard for so many reasons. This is a true neighborhood shop — we never go in without running into at least one person we know. We love Marguerite, the longtime owner, who remembers all our personal stories. Most of all, we love the merchandise. And while the bulk of the wares at P.L. include hard-to-find women's clothing lines like Flax, Krista Larson, and CP Shades, our favorite items are the ones with a little spice. There's an always-changing selection of Latin-themed art books, embroidered shirts and dresses, milagros, oilcloth (both by the yard and purses) and one-of-a-kind Day of the Dead art — from hand-carved "investment" pieces to sweet little dioramas that won't set you back much. Be careful: We find it's the accumulation of items that dents our bank account. But still, we can't wait to get over to Purple Lizard for more.
