Description

The banner on owner Russell Hobbs' website for this bar and venue only hints at the rich history behind his involvement in Deep Ellum: "The Prophet Bar, Established 1985, Re-Established 2007." It's a staple venue in Deep Ellum's on-and-off again cycles for the past 25 years -- sorta like the historic Dallas entertainment district itself. Hobbs' original Prophet Bar was an instrumental catalyst in Deep Ellum's '80s heyday, when the scene spawned a burgeoning bunch of talented local artists and musicians. The stage regularly featured locals like The Reverend Horton Heat, TimBuk3 and The New Bohemians. In 2007, when this incarnation of the Prophet Bar opened in the old Gypsy Tea Room space, Hobbs kept the legacy of a fantastic venue and bar alive. Brick walls line the sides of the narrow main room, with the stage in back and the bar on the left side leaving a wide-open space for people to hang out and mingle between sets. Or you can vie for one of the few booths up front. Note that for bigger shows, the adjacent venue, The Door, becomes The Prophet Bar's "Big Room."

  • 2011 | Best Jam Session

The term "jam session" usually elicits a groan from most live-music fanatics. But the one that takes place every Wednesday night at The Prophet Bar is like nothing you'll see in town. Hosted by Grammy-winning R&B singer Shaun Martin, the night of improvisational neo-soul and R&B sees the Prophet Bar crowded with people each week -- sometimes well after the 2 a.m. curfew. And with good reason: Erykah Badu musical director R.C. Williams and his band The Gritz make The Prophet Bar... More »
