In the heat of summer, finding places to have a drink that aren't dark and air-conditioned caves becomes a challenge. Enter Henderson Avenue's The Porch, a casual brasserie for those of us with no veranda at home. When the heat comes, fans blow a cooling but oddly humid mist that does its best to keep despair at bay. You could have a few pints here, swilling them down while enjoying a fried-chicken salad you wanted to be healthy but which is definitely not. If you'd rather be honest with yourself, you could go with the Stodg burger, named after Dallas lawyer Steve Stodghill. It's packed with tomato, onion, melted cheddar and a fried egg on a bun smeared with foie gras butter. Other stand-out decadent dishes include a baked mac and cheese accented with cubes of smoked ham and crusted in panko, and sliders heaped with brisket and slaw. You wish you had a porch like this at home.
Eleven is a skinny list. There are actually about 20 great hot sandwiches in Dallas ... well, maybe 100. Thing is, you can't really screw up rich butter smeared over fresh bread, then grilled with goo... More »

I'm trying not to obsess, but it seems like every day feels a little warmer than the last. The climbing mercury is making me want to grab onto the last days of spring and hang on as tightly as I can. ... More »

I know the food was good, but I can't remember what I had since the blueberry mojito pretty much was the star of the table.
Great place for dinner - I recently tried their greek salad and their gourmet mac n' cheese and both were excellent! Nice atmosphere too: upscale but not snooty.
Most places that serve fried cheese offer the same tired, chain restaurant examples of the dish straight out of the freezer, but the Porch elevates this, the trashiest of apps, into something fantastic and, dare we say it, highbrow. They start with a creamy and mild Port Salute cheese, doing the French monks that first produced it proud with an amazingly light, crispy batter and a warm pomodoro sauce for dipping. Sure, the dish will set you back considerably more than an order of mozzarella... More »
No doubt there is something magical about the number 3: In rhetorical flourishes (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness), in religion (the Holy Trinity, the Three Patriarchs, the Three Holy Cities of Islam), in nuclear accidents (Three Mile Island). Now that same magic has spread to the culinary rage known as the slider, which is most often served in threes. Derived from White Castle hamburgers and named for the ease with which the greasy treats slide down the gullet, these mini-burgers... More »
Named after Dallas lawyer Steve Stodghill, the Stodg Burger at The Porch, a lively hot spot in the Knox-Henderson neighborhood, is not only politically incorrect--high-calorie, high-fat, honest-to-God red meat--it might be a good idea to look over your shoulder for the food police while eating it. The combination of flavors would probably get you thrown out of culinary school. Here goes: the Stodg is a thick burger topped with a slice of cheddar cheese, which is topped with... More »
In almost every bowl of mussels served in these parts you'll get one or two that possess the lingering flavors of highly extracted morning mouth. You wince. You cringe. You struggle to spit into your napkin while maintaining decorum. If you narrowly miss a brush with the emergency room, you gulp a shot of vodka and move on to the tiramisu. This won't happen at The Porch, where fruit crisp is the preferred desert and mussels are prepared in Hefeweizen steam. These tiny, clean shellfish rest... More »
