The Phoenix is my favorite gay bar. I've only been to three in my life, so take that for what it's worth, but I can't imagine one more fun: divey and dirty (but not BJs in the men's room dirty, though I'm a naA-f, don't forget), with a decent jukebox, cuddly, generous bartenders, and a relatively unfussy gay-guy clientele (T-shirts and jeans, not power fags in power suits with handmade shoes). Plus, this seems to be where wholesome NYU types end up, ready to be exploited, which ought to count as a point in the bar's favor.
My girlfriend really likes--OK, she's completely obsessed with--having sex in public restrooms. The sleazier and nastier, the better. But there are practical considerations as well. You want it to have that sleazy feeling but not be as filthy as, say, the bathrooms at CBGB. You want the option of privacy in a stall or space enough to get things done. You wouldn't think it from looking at the place, but East Village hangout Phoenix has a wicked selection of tunes. The bare-bones bar looks like a million others, with a pool table near the back; the clientele, mostly gay men in their mid twenties to mid thirties, are there to relax, not necessarily to find a date.
