One of Santa Monica's highest-flying bars, Penthouse at the Huntley Hotel is awash in white, appointed with dainty chandeliers and divvied up (by gauzy curtains) into indoor cabanas. Each of them provides an ideal perch from which to watch the sun slink slowly behind the Palisades. Hoteliers have even installed an express elevator (with a stunning ocean view of its own) that zips past prole floors 1 to 17 to deposit patrons directly at one of the Penthouse's leather couches. Prices are surprisingly affordable, which makes stopping by for a twilight drink an absolute no-brainer.

The food and atmosphere are unbelievable. It’s beautiful. You’re right by the beach. It has the best view. You’re at the top of the hotel and can look out and see the ocean. The service is just amazing. My favorite dish is the lamb chops, and they have the best mac and cheese I’ve ever had.

On the "penthouse" level of the Huntley, this is a spectacular place to watch the sunset and then see the coastline lit up at night. Clean, chic decor - be sure to get a reservation on Friday and Saturday night or the bouncers may not let you onto the elevator (much less of a scene other nights of the week). Start with a refreshing specialty cocktail (the Cucumber Squeeze martini and Mint Lemonade are good choices) and the oysters (to die for!) and finish with the banana bread pudding. Validated parking at the hotel comes in at $8 minimum, so you might want to check for street parking first.
