The Pelican is so perfectly suited to its niche that you wonder if it would manage to thrive in any other location. Like the rest of downtown Lake Worth, this little open-air breakfast and lunch joint is willfully eccentric - part beach shack, part diner, part Indian café. The Pelican serves rave-inducing blueberry pancakes, a daily special pancake (like banana and coconut), terrific omelets bursting with fresh vegetables with thick slices of whole wheat toast, and egg/sausage/bacon combo platters for breakfast that make getting out of bed in the morning a pleasure. They slap together hot dogs and fish sandwiches for lunch. And then, Wednesday through Saturday, they serve a short menu of delicious homemade Indian dinners from 6 to 10 p.m. - samosas, vegetable curries, daal, tandoori chicken - along with a small American menu of fried fish platters and burgers.

    Indian food is not usually a favorite of mine - maybe because I hadn't had it this good. The portions aren't huge, but the flavors are amazing and the meats are extremely tender. The decor is lacking but is made up for by the kindness and great attitude of the owners. Don't miss this place.

    The Pelican is to diner as tandoor is to microwave. There's a relationship there, but you have to engage some creativity to nail it. The place looks diner-like enough: beach-themed thrift-shop art on the walls, wooden stools lining the counter, Formica tables, laminated menu. There's the cheerful, white-haired, coffeepot-wielding waitress who can recite every breakfast special on the board too.
