The Other Side and the Flying Leap Cafe are conjoined in the same charming space on Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake. The Flying Leap is a quaint little cafe with lovely folk art on the walls, including a reproduction of an appropriately aviation-themed Hugo Ballin Art Deco mural. Large windows spill out to a view of the street and a leafy green tree draped in white lights. The menu includes appetizers like onion rings and quesadillas, soup, salads, and such entrees as Oaxaca chicken, cracked-pepper linguine and mahi mahi. The bar serves standard brands of beer, along with a wider variety of international wines. The Other Side is indeed up the stairs and on the other side of the Flying Leap Cafe. It's an intimate piano bar where singers and pianists dish out jazz, blues, Broadway and standards. It's a darker, more mysterious counterpart to its sunnier and more bucolic downstairs twin, with the focus on the entertainers at the piano. The Other Side has a full bar, with happy hour running from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from noon to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
