The Original Pancake House isn't your average chain restaurant: It's been family-owned (with that family now into its third generation) since 1953. In that time, it's won a James Beard award for outstanding regional restaurant, and racked up minor kudos and baubles everywhere it goes. Every kitchen makes its own batters and its own sauces, working off recipes that demand better-quality ingredients than you'd find in some Michelin galleys. Although the line of people waiting for tables can be long, this breakfast is always worth the wait.

For a wonderful family breakfast or brunch, my vote goes to the Original Pancake House. Get there early or sit and have a cup of coffee with a "well worth the wait" in mind. Price is about average to a little above, but the portions are often huge enough to share for two. Best fresh squeezed orange juice with all the pulp and thick-cut smoky bacon and home fries you can't seem to get enough of. They offer a delicious variety of dishes that everyone is familiar with like French Toast, Belgium waffles and of course pancakes. Or try their more unique choices like their giant Apple Pancake, airy crepes or giant fluffy omelets. If you're in the mood for light, I love ordering eggs with a side of sliced tomatoes.
Strong coffee, excellent corned beef hash, unrivaled cherry crepes and fresh-squeezed orange juice like neon rocket fuel: At seven o'clock in the morning, it doesn't get better than this. The Original Pancake House uses nothing but the best ingredients and the best products, and employs line cooks who know how to work fast and clean and how to execute a complicated and worldly menu with just the right notes of comfort and consolation. The space isn't much to look at, and service is brisk, to... More »
Breakfast is a very subjective thing. There are those who like to speed through the day's first meal, wolfing down something from the drive-thru on their way to the office, others who prefer to linger over well-brewed tea and fine pastries. Cold pizza makes a good breakfast, as do a pound of hash browns, six eggs and a steak served up by some greasy-spoon hash-slinger. And for some people, there's nothing finer than that rock-and-roll breakfast of champions: black coffee and cigarettes. But... More »
