Just on the basis of suds alone, this English-style pub chugs up high marks with brews from 10 countries including three varieties of Chimay, the heady Belgian beer brewed by Trappist Monks. But Old Monk has other charms, too, from its dark wood paneling fashioned from confessional booths to its bar tables rendered from old barrels. Plus, it has decent bar fodder, including Belgian-style steamed mussels, cheese boards, frites and a German sausage plate. Go for the head, but stay for the belly. Check out the new seasonal beer.
We love to drink here at the Observer. We take no shame in our excessively inebriated stories, and actually work hard to pack as much beer and liquor into every post possible. But as much as we love b... More »
Last year I rode a bicycle up McKinney Avenue and was amazed at the sea of sweatshirts emblazoned with TX and OU. People where everywhere. And people were drunk. While it's obvious that a certain demo... More »

So many bars relegate food to burgers, wings and nachos, forgetting all the finer menu items that go well with a cold beer. Mussels served with a Belgian ale might be one of life's greatest culinary pleasures, and fish and chips with a pub draft can border on divine. The Old Monk does both of these well, and rounds out the menu with a good Reuben and a chicken sandwich featuring pistachio-breaded chicken tenders. Hell, there is even a decent burger if you want to be a traditionalist. If... More »
This distinction isn't given based on the television-to-patron ratio. If that were the case, The Old Monk would surely lose out in this super scientific selection process. No, this is based on a handful of criteria that enrich the sports-watching experience: Patio, food, booze and, yeah, televisions. The Old Monk has one of the best patios on Henderson, which is a generally accepted fact and of the utmost importance during basketball season. You can choose from an admirable selection of... More »
There are plenty of bars where you can grab a decent bite in Dallas--Lee Harvey's, the Meridian Room and the Lakewood Landing all come to mind--but the Old Monk is the only one we frequent even when we're not drinking. From the sizable burgers to the awesome fish and chips, everything on the menu is tasty, and it's all better with a side of the best skinny fries in town. And don't forget your vegetarian friends, who'll surely love the renowned (in our world at least) vegetarian... More »
At the Old Monk you can select from 14 beers on draft and nearly 50 bottled beers, including Belgian varieties so strong they could intoxicate Nate Newton. Of course, it's not just the selection of fine brew that makes the Old Monk a Dallas institution; it's the cozy feel of the place, highlighted by dark wood floors, elegant antiques and round, polished tables that look like they came from your grandparents' house, which in our case render us a little nostalgic. While the place is always... More »
This selection is perhaps unduly influenced by the unfortunate fact that we're reporters. Attorneys might prefer Ghost Bar; doctors drown their sorrows at Primo's. Laborers at insurance firms likely choose to forget about life for a while at any chain restaurant offering some variation of the Bloomin' Onion. We prefer the Old Monk, which is an affable and engaging setting for anyone who likes to talk to old friends and meet new people. The haphazard way the Old Monk is laid out allows for... More »
A night out at the bar. You've been knockin' back a Stella or 10 with your gang, maybe playing a little game of "Who Would You Rather?" (Ugh, Barbara Walters.) You're starting to get a little hungry. But you're smart, and you didn't drive to the bar, which means no trip to Jack in the Box for some grease pocket tacos. Better hope you're at the Old Monk, 'cause the Knox-Henderson staple kills every other burger-and-fries-servin' drinking establishment in town when it comes to bar food. Two... More »
We're about to make a disclosure that has nearly cost us a few friendships. When it comes to beer, we love a good bottle of Grolsch. We truly enjoy Stella Artois from the tap. Occasionally, we'll go with some breed of Chimay. We heart Boddingtons. Cheers to Harp and Fat Tire. Dear, sweet Pyramid Apricot. Good ol' Guinness. Give us a Snakebite, and we'll show you strength through the inevitable hangover because, well, it was probably worth it. They are very tasty. Priest's Collars, Black... More »
Its happy-hour deals are paltry. It offers no Golden Tee; doesn't have a dance floor; bathrooms are small; front deck overlooks a busy intersection; isn't open for lunch and is often so dark inside you can barely read. Did we mention how much we love Old Monk? This is a bar's bar, a true pub, a place that takes Irish mainstays (lots of good strong beers on tap, very few tequila choices, several great whiskey options) and combines them with a low-key charm and usually excellent customer... There are several elements to a good bar. A good bar must have an outdoor sitting area to enjoy the six days of nice weather we have each year. (Check.) Inside, the bar must be dark, for ambience and illicit hookups. (Check.) The waitstaff must be friendly but not fake, knowledgeable but not pushy. (Check.) The beer selection must be ample. (Check.) The clientele must have a median age above 29 but have enough pieces of 21-year-old male and female eye candy to make the view pleasant.... More »
Few gastronomical adventures really excite us anymore. We love good food, but it seems as though we're too jaded--or just too fat--to believe that there is really any end-all, be-all dish. "Oh, the sea bass, yes, it was tremendous, but surely someone in town does it better, no?" Not so with this dish. No one in town does fried calamari better. No one on this earth does calamari better. It simply cannot be prepared in any more perfect a fashion than it is at Old Monk. The delicate ovals of... More »
Most beer gulpers don't have a palate that ventures much beyond leftovers found between the couch cushions. But Trappist monks have always enjoyed good food to go along with their beer brewing--or so we've been told. That's why the Old Monk, a pub rife with Trappist monk imagery, has a range of good nibbles such as delicious mussels steamed in beer spiked with garlic and herbs, cheese boards, and fried calamari sleeved in a light, airy batter. What we want to know is, do monks pray before... More »
Event Review: The Old Monk
After a few days it seems your liver is finally recovering from Saturday's St. Patrick's Day parade. But then the realization hits you: St. Patrick's Day is actually Wednesday. You thought you were done drinking green beer and listening to bagpipe music? Wahahahahaha--no way are you done drinking green beer and listening to bagpipe music. The Old Monk's celebration begins bright and early at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, with corned beef and cabbage, Guinness beef stew, and fish and chips on the menu till 10 p.m. Considering the line-up of entertainment--Irish dancers at 4 p.m., Homespun Remedies at 5 p.m., a live bagpiper at 7:30 p.m. and the mighty RTB2 at 9 p.m.--you'll also have plenty of time to let that delicious Irish cuisine marinate in a belly full of green beer (or one of the Old Monk's many other fine selections). So head on down to 2847 N. Henderson Ave. and practice your fake cough, 'cause you are definitely calling in sick Thursday. Call 214-821-1880 or visit oldmonkdallas.com.
A Dallas mainstay. The parking situation is terrible, but don't let that keep you from going. Beer selection is first rate and the food is delicious.
