Peopled with '50s-greaser types, Daddy-O's, straight-out-of-the-swamp locals, and your average trendsters, the Monterey Club's clientele matches its rockabilly retro theme. Animal-print rugs cover the floor, Kreepy Tiki Tattoo Shop shares a door, hot rods are parked outside, and the Cupcake Burlesque troupe calls it home. What the lounge area lacks in size, the owners have made up for in comfort by lining the walls with cushy couches. Make-shift benches attached to support beams offer even more places to sit. No hard stuff, but the bar makes up for it by offering about 35 beers, including Brooklyn Lager, Flying Dog, and Dogfish Head as well as ciders and wine. The musical talent also flows at a comfortable rate. The intimate club's national bookings include underground folkie Paleface and legend Clarence Reid's alternate persona Blowfly, and locals The Freakin' Hott, Zombies! Organize!!, To Be Hated, and Boise Bob and His Backyard Band also graced their stage. DJ Sensitive spins on Tuesday, and karaoke finishes off the week on Sundays. Added bonus: you can play free pool.

The song of the modern-day siren is equally beautiful and seductive as it was in Homer's Odyssey but not so explicitly deadly, which is nice. For some reason back then, these gals got a kick out of using their seductive voices to lure sailors... More »
Not much lingers on that South Federal Highway route to Fort Lauderdale Airport, but near State Road 84 -- right next to the skating rink -- lies the Monterey Club. It's a joint built for folks who choose a night's location based on music. The bar stands out as a small music venue -- it books both killer national and local acts and has a fully functioning sound system. Outside, hot rods fill the street (the owner has a 1950 Mercury Monterey), and inside, it's rockabilly retro.... More »
