On Miami's mobile food scene, there is no shortage of tacos. But The MexZican Gourmet makes a bid as the first taco purveyor on the upscale-truck circuit to aim more for authenticity than fusion. Proprietor and chef Zé Carlos Jimenez was born in Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico, where he learned his homeland's classic cuisine from his grandmother. In Miami, he's best known as the consultant chef for the epically named, casual fusion joint Dolores but You Can Call Me Lolita, and this truck is his first public return to his roots. It's no surprise the stars of the pared-down menu are tacos, which are - gluten-free alert! - made with corn tortillas and cost $2.25 each or $6 for three. If you're hungry, you'll want the last option, as the six meat selections are served mostly naked on the tortilla, with just a wedge of lime on the side. Puebla chicken is the most American-friendly option, while a "Yucatan" taco dazzles with a succulent cochinita pibil, and the "legacy" mixes up brisket, chorizo, and chicharron. Heartier - though less authentic - are "quezadillas [sic]," which can be ordered meatless, and a "Mexican sub" that veers back toward Tex-Mex fare. End your meal with a food truck-ubiquitous Mexican Coke (made with real sugar!) or Jarritos ($1.75).
