Description

This stalwart of Exposition Park has been a popular hangout for discerning bar goers in Dallas for well over a decade. There isn't a specific draw. Rather, discovering the bar's subtleties will make you a regular, just like the Expo Park dwellers and music fans who hang out in the nearby Deep Ellum neighborhood. The way the sun creates long shadows that fill the narrow space in the late afternoon is sublime, especially with a two- or three-beer buzz. A rotation of local artwork covers one wall, while a tall wooden case holds hundreds of bottles behind the bar on the other side. And the food, a selection of high-brow pub grub, is great for dinner or a late-night snack.

Nothing Middling About The Meridian Room Brunch

Saturday night ended with a glass of "buttershops," the beverage I make when things look really, really dire on the home bar front. It's brandy and butterscotch liquer, and generally by the time I get... More »

  • 2012 | Best Veggie Burger at a Non-Veggie Joint

At most non-veg eateries, a veggie burger is a sad, shrunken prospect, some freezer-burned Morningstar cast-off tossed unadorned onto a plate. A non-burger like that can darken the whole dining room. Not Meridian Room, though: If their veggie burger isn't made in-house, they're doing a damn good job fooling us into thinking otherwise. The patty somehow tastes juicy and like whole grains at the same time, and they'll cheerily pile that sucker with avocado, havarti and jalapeños on... More »

  • 2011 | Best Bloody Mary

Screw the Wheaties. The real breakfast of champions, especially on a lazy Sunday, is a good Bloody Mary. It should be strong without being overpowering, spicy without making your eyes water, and, above all, there should be some stuff keeping your alcohol company in that glass: olives, pickles, celery, whatever, as long as there's a little bite of sourness and crunch to pingpong off the spicy red of the drink. Meridian Room isn't afraid to garnish their version with all the goodies. When it's... More »

  • 2007 | Best Bar

We want it all from our bar. We like a bar with a nice blend of drunks and fashionable folk so we can have something to laugh at and ogle while we take in our Boddingtons (which they have on tap, thanks) or Stella or vodka whatevers. We love a comfortable bar stool. We love the option of ordering really, really good food (Guinness steak sandwich with fries, please) to soak up our drink. We appreciate the presence of DJ Mr. Rid's Scaraoke every Thursday night for a good bit of... More »

  • 2005 | Best Reason to Call in Sick on Friday

Can you tell the difference between a voice scratchy and raw from a nasty case of bronchitis on the verge of pneumonia from one harmed by four hours spent in a smoky bar and performing a scream-filled rendition of Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It"? Nope. And neither can your boss. See, Skaraoke--hosted every Thursday night from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. by DJ Mr. Rid--is a reason and an excuse to take a three-day weekend. The long-running (first at XPO Lounge and now at Meridian Room) event... More »

  • 2004 | Best Place to Order a Negroni

Old-fashioned drinks require a certain atmosphere. Not necessarily a clubbish dark wood and leather, billowing clouds of cigar smoke, British accents type thing, mind you. Cocktails like the negroni or the mint julep or the old-fashioned call out for a bar. That is, a room dominated by a long counter backed by rows and rows of alcohol--the kind of place your grandfather frequented back when the greatest generation led this country through Prohibition, the Depression, war. You know, the... More »

  • 2003 | Best Use of Pineapple Juice

We used to think that our old college roommate's homemade piņa coladas were the best possible use for pineapple juice. They were so good we almost didn't mind the brain freeze we got trying to hide the evidence from our dorm monitor. But, you see, we had yet to discover The Scza. While the name (pronounced skee-za) sounds like something you might hear on Doggy Fizzle Televizzle, and, in fact, it is off da hizzle fo' shizzle, there's nothing ghetto about this Meridian Room original. A co... More »

  • 2001 | Best Bar for Kicking Back

This beautifully restored hangout is one of the best places to buy mixed drinks, or as their ads say, "classic cocktails," in Dallas. Unlike the party-hardy scene in Deep Ellum and Lower Greenville, the Meridian Room is a great place for real camaraderie, not drunken blowouts. The Exposition Park neighborhood near Fair Park is still a fringe-y area best known for Forbidden Books and a Wiccan church (or temple?), but places like the Meridian Room and Hungree's (a nearby sandwich joint) are... Went there for brunch yesterday, food was great as always. Try the jalapeno soup with their Cuban sammy. Chilaquiles are yummy as well, and they have $2.50 mojitos and champagne drinks during brunch. Turkey brie sandwich is awesome, too.
