Melt's premise: comfort food -- grilled cheeses and soups -- for smart-phone owners. The sandwiches, produced in a machine that griddles the bread and microwaves the cheese at the same time, are functional, though not as gooey and crunchy as the grilled cheese you've been making for yourself since age 7. More interesting are the soups, such as a creamy wild mushroom and a bright, basil-tinged tomato, with fresh, balanced flavors. And you can order and pay online, then scan your phone when you arrive at the restaurant, when your order will get zapped to the cooks. Very 21st century.
