The economy's downturn has elevated so many dishes that were considered below our notice before. Now the humble meatball comes rolling our way, exulted to the level of a glamorous entrée. Check out the handsome premises of the Meatball Shop--decorated with deconstructed meat grinders--and note the large variety of meatball-matching opportunities. Start out with the exemplary meatball hero: Made with beef balls and excellent mozzarella, it's the best meatball hero in town. The lamb meatballs, when available, are even better, and the pork version's good, too, but skip the salmon balls and vegetarian balls. Also wonderful are the various combinations of cookies and ice cream made into dessert sandwiches.

Always GOOD...Always CROWDED...but still Always GOOD! My Regular: Beef Smash with Parm Cream Sauce and Provolone and then Peanut Butter Cookie with Mint Ice Cream
Chicken meatballs often have the consistency of grainy cotton balls, which is why we're smitten by the ones at the perennially packed Meatball Shop--they're as tender and juicy as can be. We'll eat them in any preparation, but our most beloved method of consumption is in a hero with mushroom sauce and melted mozzarella. After eating this whopper, you won't ever want meatballs on spaghetti again. 84 Stanton Street, 212-982-8895, themeatballshop.com More »
It was a brilliant move on the part of chef Daniel Holzman to take an Italian-American classic, the meatball hero, and make slight improvements to it, instead of transforming the fuck out of it so that it was no longer recognizable. He began by selecting really, really good bread, which yields soon after you chomp down, instead of resisting your teeth and squirting the balls out the end. He also used fresh mozzarella instead of the crap you find in most pizza parlors. The meatball hero at... More »
