Description

The Library is named as such in the same way that Bob Saget's most famous joke is called "The Aristocrats." After taking in its scholarly façade--sullied racks and racks of books--you spot, on a sign above the bar, an advertisement for "The Pube," which consists of a can of Busch and a shot of whiskey, all for $5. That's the drink of a true dive. Grunge and punk music blares in the background, and skull heads decorate the blackened room to match.

    Business success guides from the 1980s sit on inaccessibly high shelves in this dimly lit East Village bar. Despite the used and rejected pop-psychology books that line the shelves here, THE LIBRARY is indistinguishable from your average pub. Overly loud Velvet Underground blares from the jukebox as after-work types crowd into the bar's comfy booths.     Trying to find a Manhattan bar that's not packed on a weekend night can be more challenging than whipping through Saturday's Times crossword. So it beats me why the LIBRARY, a bar nestled on a thoroughfare well trodden by Camper-soled hipsters, always has a welcoming booth open.
