The Libertine is a small free-standing building designed to look like a colonial-era tavern. Located just north of Lower Greenville's club scene, the bar attracts foodies and beer snobs alike. The place is known for spinning excellent indie rock music, and for its five-course beer-pairing dinners dinners. The menu goes beyond typical pub grub, too. Among the hits are the cheese board, with selections that change weekly; steak au poivre with potatoes au gratin in a port-wine reduction; and pulled pork tacos. Of course, if you want to slum it, wings and PBR are available.
According to Eater a suspended coffee trend is going viral on social media. The practice allows any customer at a Starbucks to buy a "suspended" coffee drink to leave at the counter. Those less fortun... More »
Beer people don’t need much prodding to attend a dinner dedicated to extolling the virtues of beer. It’s sort of a non-challenge. In the case of the Libertine Bar Saint Arnold Beer Dinner, we really just have to mention the name of the event and... More »
Well, OK, "hate" is a strong word. Besides, love is close to hate. Indifference is actually the bad place. Anyhoo! The holidays are upon us. And remember, it's healthy to release the pressure created ... More »
Eleven is a skinny list. There are actually about 20 great hot sandwiches in Dallas ... well, maybe 100. Thing is, you can't really screw up rich butter smeared over fresh bread, then grilled with goo... More »
A couple of weeks ago, I kept seeing chiles pop up on menus in everything from margaritas to brownies, and while that's not too surprising this time of year, it gave me pause. Back in April, Iron Fork... More »
A touchstone gastropub since before people started using that silly term around these parts, the Libertine offers upscale cuisine at bar-food prices and has a great selection of craft beers and imports. It manages to do so without succumbing to the pitfalls of a stuffy atmosphere or high prices. So it makes sense that its monthly beer dinners (7 p.m. on the last Wednesday of the month) would offer great food with well thought-out complementary suds and, best of all, generous pours. Even... In three years of watching and competing in the Libertine Bar's annual corn-dog eating contest, we've seen contestants order and down shots mid-bout, seen a drunken "pregnant" girl give birth (to a balloon, but still) under the table in the midst of the action and watched a contestant run outside to vomit and return to finish the match. Intoxicated and nitrate-maddened spectators will intimidate and threaten physical violence against rivals. And God forbid you should tie with anyone, as that... More »
The only thing better than the Libertine's bar food is the Libertine's bar food on Tuesdays. Each Tuesday, the Libertine hosts half-price food night, when everything on the menu (with the exception of the cheese plate) is half-priced. Chef Taylor McCreary does his best to accommodate customers who have been eating at the European-style pub for years with items like the hog wings -- miniature pork shanks tossed in poblano pepper sauce served with pickled carrots and celery. He also makes... More »
As skilled as the cooks are at this pub, sometimes it's nice to just order a big, shareable platter of cheese that you can leave at the table and eat at your leisure. It's easy to customize and choices change weekly as new artisan meats and cheeses are available. The servers are knowledgeable about suggesting something to go with whatever you're drinking, and the savories come with nuts (we especially love the glazed almonds), fruits and vegetables that complement and contrast whatever... One of our favorite bars in the world, the Libertine has racked up awards for everything from Best Bar, Period to Best Bar Food (twice) to the very esoteric Best Place To Take The Marquis De Sade. And while it still richly deserves all of those accolades and more, we've got to spread the love. So this year, we salute the Libertine's happy hour. A flat dollar off beer, wine and liquor from 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays makes it a bit easier to justify that Satan Red Belgian ale or shot of scotch.... More »
If there's anything more American than baseball and apple pie, it's getting tanked and stuffing yourself with fried food on a stick. So it's no wonder the Libertine's celebrated the last two Fourths of July with a 15-minute corn-dog eating contest. First and second place get bar tabs, third place wins a roll of quarters, and ties are broken with shots of tequila. It's billed as a "family event," but try telling that to the trash-talking girl pretending she's pregnant, or the overzealous... More »
There are plenty of reasons why the Libertine deserves recognition--the traditional pub atmosphere, the friendly faces behind the bar, and the fact that, even though it's not much of a venue, the place does its part to support local music with live performances. But the best reason to love the Libertine? The food offered up by the folks in the kitchen. The burger, the tuna sandwich, the three-way fries--they're all legit. And the best part: the pricing. Or, better yet, the... More »
This European pub's atmosphere is as cool as its beer selection, which includes a wide range of Belgian ales, rare stouts and ambers, and organic brews. Then there's the food. Here, pedestrian bar fare is nowhere to be found. Instead, there are delicious sandwiches like the grilled cheese; the Cuban, shredded pork with artichoke hearts, roasted peppers, jalapeños and olives; and a wood-grilled flat-iron steak with port wine reduction and shallots. The Hog Wings, with meat falling off... More »

Are you morally unrestrained? Do you believe in extreme freedom? Can you defy social and religious norms? Above all, might you love gourmet macaroni and cheese? If so, you're probably a libertine, which means you should drink at the Libertine Bar with your libertine friends, ordering copious amounts of delicious Fin du Monde beer. The Lower Greenville outpost, founded by the owners of the equally impressive Meridian Room, features a debauched European theme complete with a giant painting of... More »

No wonder, since the place was started by the founders of the Meridian Room.
My Friday night spot. Always new beers on draft and the food is great!!
Mmm, yummy Pimms Cups. Their food is leaps and bounds above regular bar food, too.
