Like St. Paul"s version of Murray"s Steak House, this is the kind of place you might have expected to find Dean Martin sitting at the bar, or maybe your parents on a fancy date back in the day. Fine dining in the retro sense: a meal that begins with a shrimp cocktail and a martini, includes salad and potato and a juicy steak, and perhaps finishes with a brandy Alexander. The kind of place where a man really should put on a suit jacket. The Lex has been doing it up like this for over 80 years, so it has it down pat. Recently the restaurant has changed owners and updated its menu a bit. But the stunning vintage details of the dining room and bar are still a treat. On a budget? Have a $5 martini at happy hour Monday-Friday from 3-6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 2-5 p.m.
