Description

The Knockout has been called a clubhouse for big kids, and that's a pretty apt description. Started by brothers and longtime Mission District bartenders dX and John Segura, the place just bleeds their love for kitsch, rockabilly, monster movies, and low-brow culture. On any given night, there might be a touring mod band tearing up the stage, or a DJ spinning metal or old funk 45s, or a drunken, raucous game of bingo going down. There's a photo booth, a few tabletop videogames, and walls covered with dX's distinctive paintings and poster art. Look for the hip kids out front, plenty of tattoos inside, and John serving up an overflowing shot glass of Jim Beam on the planks.

  • 2010 | Best Club Night to Wear Flannel

The first Saturday of every month, divey hipster watering hole the Knockout becomes a time machine that transports all those people who were teenagers in the '90s back to their childhood bedrooms. But you can check your angst at the door (just don't forget your flannel before 11 p.m., otherwise you pay $5 cover) because this is a full-out eardrum-busting party where kids who never got the chance to live out their alternative music fantasies (or maybe they did, and never got over it) can bump... • 2009 | Best Place to Hear the Worst Music

At the Knockout's free party "Worst Music Ever," held the first Thursday of every month, Dimitri Dickinson, Ryan Poulsen, and friends drop the bombs that usually drive people away from bars. Here they spin clunkers like Chris De Burgh, Smash Mouth, and Robbie Nevil to court drinkers with a healthy sense of humor. "Worst Music Ever" welcomes the backlash against the irony backlash -- after all, sarcasm is too criminally addictive to banish for long. In a city that takes underground... More »

  • 2009 | Best Novelty Drink

Sparks, the candy-flavored alcoholic beverage that once fueled the nights of many a hipster, is not without its detractors. In fact, enough people have complained that the fizzy novelty drink appeals to children that consumer activists were able to get caffeine scratched from its ingredient list. But the sugary drink is still easy to swill, making it an ideal component of the hilariously named Bro-seff. This $6 drink provides the theatricality appreciated by the chest-pounding,... More »

Is Giving a Shit the New Not Giving a Shit? Future Twin Explores Music as a Vehicle of Change

    | Wed, March 7, 2012

As a generalization, pop stars write generic songs about love, make absurd amounts of money, and then throw a miniscule portion of that money at issues they care about. (Or, possibly, that their PR h... More »

    | Wed, August 31, 2011

In the long, loud, freak-studded history of Bay Area garage rock, the Mummies have hollowed out a special place. Founded in S.F. in 1988, this four-piece took stripped-down, amped-up guitar pop to heights of volume, satire, and obnoxiousness, coin... More »
