This Ace Hotel location marks the second incarnation of seafood emporium the John Dory Oyster Bar, the original having lasted less than a year on a desolate block in West Chelsea. Foot traffic isn't a problem now-the space buzzes nightly with trendsetters and foodies. Despite questionable décor (think tacky Caribbean beach shack meets hip lounge, with a touch of Gymboree), and sometimes inconsistent food, the quality is generally top-notch. Among the small plates, opt for the excellent raw oysters, parsley and anchovy toast, lobster panade, oyster pan roast, and escarole salad. Drop by during off-hours or for lunch: You'll avoid the throngs and hour-long waits and people who think they're the only fish in the sea.

At her seafood-centric restaurant, John Dory Oyster Bar, chef April Bloomfield (along with chef de cuisine Josh Even) transforms two of the most prosaic ingredients imaginable--anchovies and parsley--into a truly magical toast. Fashioning them into a chunky, bright green pesto finished with a touch of lemon, garlic, and olive oil, she spreads the mixture onto thin pieces of chewy toast. Given the cool $4 price tag, it's safe to say that this is one of the best appetizer deals in... More »
