Description

A certain breed of well-groomed Angelenos like to look at East Coast media people looking at Angelenos, which is why they flock to the Ivy, a pretty, sun-bleached patio restaurant that looks the way Los Angeles is supposed to if your experience of the town comes from the movies. The food - crab cakes, corn chowder, New Orleans-style barbecued shrimp - is acceptable though expensive, down-home food at uptown prices. But the Ivy may thrive because it caters to the sort of whims legion in this part of town. If South Beach and Atkins were national cuisines, the Ivy would be an ethnic restaurant.

I love this place not just because of the atmosphere. Everybody knows how great the atmosphere is at the Ivy. I love the sauce they put on their carne asada. It’s not on the menu. It’s skirt steak -- fajita meat. They cook it perfectly, and the sauce they put on it is the greatest I’ve ever had in any restaurant. Also off the menu is fried chicken. It’s outstanding as well. Their salads are great.

For some, it's all about seeing and being seen on the patio (the best place to sit) - the paparazzi know it so well that they stake the place out to catch the celebs coming and going. But the reason this restaurant became popular to begin with is the food: massive servings of delicious Ivy favorites such as grilled calamari, awesome onion rings, corn chowder, fried chicken, fish and chips, grilled veggie salads with chicken or shrimp, linguine with lobster (always on the list of specials), spaghetti & meatballs. Start with an Ivy gimlet (with Belvedere) and end with the berry cobbler or ice cream sundae. If you are looking for the same menu in a scene that's more sedate, head west to Ivy at the Shore.
