While true jerk chicken needs a kiss of flame and the tinge of smoke from pimento wood, you’d have to go all the way to Jamaica to get it. Island Spot neglects some of the finer points of authenticity, but they do put together a stellar jerk chicken based on freshly cracked spices and pungent aromatics. Goat, mutton and chicken curries round out the Island menu that pleases far more than it disappoints. Skip the meat pies and hit up one of the best lunch specials in town. You can get a main and two sides for less than 10 bucks during the day. In the evenings come hungry, as the portions are big. And depending on what time you have to be up the next day, indulge a rum punch or seven. It’s as sweet as it is boozy.
While Dallas celebrates its recent barbecue renaissance with newcomers Lockhart Smokehouse and Pecan Lodge, a sleeper has been quietly smoking away in Carrollton. Island Spot's jerk chicken may not be as prized as a perfectly smoked brisket, but it's the best Jamaican 'cue in Dallas, for sure.
